Claudien ( Claudius Claudianus ) is a Latin Poète which writes towards 400 a. J. - C.
Life
Claudien was born in France ]], perhaps with Alexandria. Poet of court and society man, it had remained pagan, more by attachment with the tradition that by religious conviction, it seems. One knows few details about his life.
He wrote in Latin, sometimes also in Greek. Its style, influenced by rhetoric, is vigorous. With Prudence, it is one of the last large poets Latin of the Roman Empire.
Works
Claudien is the author of poems of circumstance, intended for glorifier Stilicon (death in 408) and the emperor Honorius: bridal panegyrics, poems (epithalamia), celebration of military victories, invectives.
He is also the author of epopee S mythological:
- the Abduction of Proserpine ;
- Gigantomachie (“combat of the Giants”).
There is also to him a collection of small various poems, in Latin but also in Greek.
