Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat , born with Nimes in 1936, is a contemporary painter French.

He studied at the School of the Art schools of Montpellier of 1955 with 1959, then with the École of the Art schools of Paris in 1962 - 63, in the workshop of Raymond Legueult. In 1966, Claude Viallat adopts a process containing prints, which registers it in a radical criticism of the Lyric abstraction and geometrical (in the technique known as All-over ). A neutral form, neither natural nor geometrical, is repeated on a free fabric, without frame, determining the composition of work.

In 1969, is founding member of the group Supports/Surfaces.

In his recent works, Claude Viallat returned on rectangular or square plane surfaces, privileging a déchaînement  internal components, stressing always more the reports/ratios of density, intensity, brightness enters coloured surfaces. In addition to the growing success of its exposures so much in France (at the Center Pompidou in 1982) that abroad (Biennale de Venise in 1988), it is devoted to its work of teacher in the following schools of art: Nice, Limoges, Marseilles, Nimes (where he was director long years), finally Paris at the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the Art schools of Paris. From now on with the retirement it continues its exploratory research.

Multiple references are asserted by the artist: Matisse and Picasso but also Simon Hantaï and American Jackson Pollock, Sam Francis, Jules Olitski, Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland…; they are used to build a polymorphic work which also integrates the tauromachic practice of the drawing.

By analyzing his work, one discovers the relationship with primitivism, in a total artistic vision, not only on the level of the Western avant-gardes but also of the different practices at the planetary level. Exposing regularly to the gallery Jean Baker in Paris since 1968, it is at present represented by the gallery Daniel Templon.

Claude Viallat received in 2007 the price of painting of the Foundation Simon and Cino del Duca- Institut of France.

Style of Viallat

The fabrics of Claude Viallat are structured by a single reason employed in all its paintings. It is its mark of identity, its signature. Of aucuns see a kind of pallet there, of other an ossicle; the majority agree to describe the reason under the name of " haricot".
