Claude Tresmontant

Claude Tresmontant was a philosopher, hellenist and hébraïsant and Théologie French N, born in 1927, died in 1997.

Claude Tresmontant taught during many years the medieval Philosophie and the Philosophie of sciences to the Sorbonne. He was corresponding Academy of Science morals and political; he obtained the Maximilien-Kolbe price in 1973 and the Grand Prix of the Academy of Science morals and policies for the whole of his work in 1987.

Faith, reason and science

Its work concerns on the Philosophie of sciences and the history of the Christian thought since its Hebraic origins. Tresmontant defends the idea of a philosophy and a metaphysics Christian women. For him, the Hebraic thought whose Christianity inherited constitutes, beside the thought of India, China and Greece a " phylum" with whole share, having its own categories, its vision of time, its morals, its anthropology, its metaphysics, etc

He also thinks that the data of the current scientific knowledge, in particular in cosmology and biology, result in affirming the existence of God. The question of the existence of God would thus not raise, as opposed to what affirms modern philosophy since at least Kant, of the belief, but of the reason. The faith would thus not be a jump in the absurdity, but quite to the contrary an approval of the intelligence, as the majority of the believers affirms it.

According to him the history of philosophy presents two designs of the activity of the intelligence, of the reason: the first method, which could be described as arts person, consists in posing a metaphysical principle a priori from which would be deduced an epistemology, a cosmology and thus a practical philosophy. The second, mainly inaugurated by Aristote and to a certain extent before him by Socrate, consists on the contrary starting from the reality given in the experiment of thus subjecting itself making to its reality objectifies and to seek to bring an explanation to him which is treated on a hierarchical basis according to the three degrees of abstraction: sciences of nature, mathematics, metaphysics. For Claude Tresmontant, only the second method is scientist, philosophical.

It also took again the thesis that “ the teaching of the rabbi (Ieshoua) was given in dialect Araméen and in Hebrew. It is only later that this teaching was represented in the Greek popular of the time ” ( first elements of theology , edition of 1987, p. 118). In foreword of this edition, it notes: “ theology is a science needs from time to time, just like other sciences, to make its toilet, to refresh the ideas, to re-examine its vocabulary and to reconsider its basic concepts ”.

The work of Claude Tesmontant, is recognized by the academics. The works published with the Threshold, which was a time an independent catholic editor, are translated into many languages and represent one moment of modernistic catholic theology. He was the executor of Pierre Teilhard of Chardin for his theological works while Theodore Monod was it for scientific works.

Scientific rupture

Its Hebrew Christ marks the rupture with the academic world. Refused by the Threshold , the work in which it tries to acclimatize the metanoïa John AT Robinson, ends up being accepted at FX Guibert. After a retroversion of the 4 Gospels, it compares the differences and the resemblances and pleads of them for a Hebrew original.

In spite of undeniable the quality of translator of Tresmontant, the retroversion proves precisely only qualities of the translator. The work remains interesting like garden of Greek roots and Hebraic roots. Some tend to criticize this book because it would contain too many lamentations where the author complains to be misunderstood and because it would contain some gaps in the comparison between the various accounts of the Gospels.

This work was prefaced by Monseigneur Jean-Charles Thomas, then bishop of Corsica. It granted the Imprimatur to him, which created a kind of scandal and the CEF modified the rules of attribution of the imprimatur.
