Claude Richard , French mathematician, born in 1589 with Ornans, in the county of Burgundy, of a allied family to the Granvelle.

Biography

It followed the count de Cantecroix, nephew of the cardinal of Granvelle in its embassy with Venice, and traversed the Italy to satisfy its curiosity. During its stay with Rome, he renonça all, with blow with the advantages which the world could offer to him, embraced the institute of Saint-Ignace, and, after a few months of tests, was sent to Tournon to continue his studies there. He made great progress in Hebrew and mathematics, which he professed seven years with Lyon. He obtained then his superiors the permission to share work of the dedicated missionaries who carried in the China, with the Gospel, the lights et.les sciences of Europe.

He was in way to go to Lisbon, where he was to embark, when he was named by the king of Spain Philippe IV of Spain mathematics professor to the college founded lately with Madrid. He fills this pulpit forty years, with a zeal which the age could not weaken, and died the October 20th 1664.

Publications

One owes him:
  1. an edition of works of Archimedes, with notes, in-fol., Paris, 1626 ( bibl. of Harwood , T. 1st, p. 175) or 1646 ( bibl. curious about David Clément , T. 2, p. 7). The P. Richard took for base of his work the edition published little time before by David Rivault de Flurence.
  2. Commentarius in omnes libros Eudidis , Antwerp, 1645, in-4°;
  3. Commentarii in Apollonii Pergœi Conicorum libros 4 , ibid, 1655, in-fol., fig. It dedicated this work to Raimond de Moncade, by an epistle, which contains the history of this house, one of most famous of the Spain.
  4. Ordo novus, and reliquis facilior, tabularum sinuum and tangentium . This work is anonymous: none the consulted bibliographers indicates the date of it nor the format. The P. Richard had built a magnetic watch, by the means of which one knew the hour that it was in all the parts of the ground (see the Histoire shortened of the Comté of Burgundy , by Mr. Grappin, p. 281).
