It is resulting from a family of eleven children of which only two survived. Gauze during the First World War, it will remain almost blind of an eye.Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, founder of the Royal Academy of Dramatic art, recognizes its talent of actor and pays him lessons in order to correct its elocution (Rains was affublé of a terrible accent cockney and was of more unable to pronounce the sound “R”).
It is however thanks to its voice that it is made known with Hollywood, in a role where one discovers his face only with the last scene, since it is about the invisible Man of James Whale. Thereafter, the studios Universal entrust the role to him titrates in the remake of 1943 of the Fantôme of the opera, where it succeeds a star of the silent film of horror: Lon Chaney, the man with the thousand faces (it had turned before with the son of this last, Lon Chaney Jr, in the Werewolf).
