Claude Perdriel
Claude Perdriel , born the October 25th 1926, is leading French newspapers, with the head in particular of the Nouvel Observateur and in the years 1970-1980 of the daily newspaper the Morning of Paris .
Youth
Claude Perdriel was born within an easy family whose mother is of origin Basque and whose father directs a company. He is high in the 16th district of Paris with the rules of one education to English which undoubtedly explain that he shows himself, outwards, “of so free and released pace”. Raise with the Lycée Janson-with-Sailly, its political conscience emerges in particular at the time of the application of the laws anti-semites (1942). Later, it binds friendship with Jean-Louis Rabaté, a young middle-class man who shares his passion for mechanics and with which it moves in after its entry with Polytechnique (1947). Belonging to these “young people of sixteenth” who attend mainly pupils of universities, it then seems “an always agitated” young man, “disordered, capricious, never per hour” which keeps “seldom more than six months the same car” and “more than three months the same boyfriend”.
It does not express of it less opinions of left and a taste for the journalism which illustrate the wrong numbers of Combat or of France-Evening that it carries out at its school. The lively interest which it expresses for the music, contemporary painting and the literature also lead it to assiduously attend the bookstore of the editions of Midnight. They is there that it binds friendship with Jacques Brenner, a young writer who introduces it into the literary circles and invites it to finance its literary review: Books of the Seasons . From 1954, it thus ensures on its own wages of engineer the financing of a review where it côtoie, amongst other things, Bernard Frank, Jean-Louis Bory or Jean-Louis Curtis.
From France Observer in Nouvel Observateur
At the same time directing and administrator, it leaves the property of the title at his editorial board. But the review, even diffused by the Fasquelle editions, proves too overdrawn and must cease its publication in 1958. A time associated with Edmond de Rothschild in a company with real estate, it sells successively coal, elevators and finally of the stations of treatments of water within the French company of cleansing which it directs as from 1958. But if it grows rich thanks to its patents, its desire “to direct a newspaper to defend an ideal of justice” remains intact. Thus, in 1960, he proposes with his friend Jean Daniel of launching a newspaper. But this last refuses and Gilles Martinet presents to him which invites it to help France Observer . In 1961, it brings an financial aid of 80&thinsp thus there; 000 francs.
But whereas it launches the Company valoisienne of the industrial premises (1962), the tensions of Jean Daniel with the director of the Express train worsen as much as the debts of Obs France. Thus engage in spring 1964 of the negotiations between them in which it seems the principal financial support even if it has only half of the 1 200 000 francs which he states to invest personally. In fact, “to as well give confidence to people of the newspaper” as “to intimidate possible competitors”, it “lets believe as it engages much more”, sells all that it has and is involved in debt for the remainder. It takes 30  thus; % of the capital of SA the Nouvel Observateur of the World and direction of its board of directors.
But if it ensures the head office of it, its responsibilities remain limited to the financial and commercial fields. Charged with working out the projected budget of the whole of the services during the last quarters of each year, it distributes and controls the means granted even if it endeavors to decentralize management as much as possible. At the commercial level, its matter marketing attributions allow him, not without difficulties, to obtain a right to watch on the choice of the cover. Lastly, its editorial matter intervention is made feel on the means and the long run by the capacity which it has - with Jean Daniel - to recruit the writers, to create the headings or to carry out the promotional operations. Thus, if its influence is undoubtedly largest with the service “Our Time”, it holds especially by its role in the recruitment of some. Bernard Frank, Christiane Duparc, Olivier Todd (in 1970), Claire Bretécher or François-Henri de Virieu owes him their arrival. But it has sometimes evil to impose the reclassification of certain journalists resulting from other titles of which he is owner like Pierre Bénichou (in 1968) or Pierre Ajame (in 1978).
Politically difficult to identify even if he says himself of left, he seems to be attached on a liberal left open to the security questions carried by May 68. If not, it essentially divides the political line followed by Jean Daniel except for the israélo-Palestinian question about which it appears more pro-Israeli. It is also characterized by an opening to the questions from ecology which even leads it to launch a monthly magazine ecologist ( the Savage ) in 1973 or to support Michel Bosquet in his fight against the nuclear capacity. But it is also sensitive to the questions of contraception like illustrates it its resumption of the review of the Family planning, or with the economic questions (launching of the economic Press in 1975).
Countryside of Mitterrand in 1974
On the initiative of Georges Dayan, François Mitterrand proposes in June 1973 to deal to him with its next presidential campaign, then planned for 1976. Accepting after Jean Daniel made it wait more than two months to give him his agreement, it takes in hand the design and the animation of the team of countryside in April 1974. Charged with the publicity campaign and the slogans, it settles for one month with the Tour Montparnasse with Bernard Villeneuve and Dominique Roussel. But it runs up quickly against the federations and André Rousselet which occupies the same place as him in the flow chart.
Its proposals to modify the style and the slogan of the countryside are disallowed while one disputes the file of the subscribers to him whom it partly constituted starting from the Nouvel Observateur , its readers having alone provided five franc million. It falls then in disgrace at Mitterrand. Its relationships to this last worsen more especially as at the end, this last requires of him to demolish file. Claude Perdriel agreeing to divide it but not to give it, it follows an argument from there. However, this one is poked when in 1977, it wishes to make use of it to launch a daily newspaper of the morning.
The adventure of the Morning of Paris
This year 1977 marks a rupture in his report/ratio with the Nouvel Observateur related to its departure to make sure of the launching of the Matin of Paris (March 1977).
Admittedly, initially, it must ensure the direction of the drafting on a purely provisional basis until the legislative elections of March 1978. But it remains there finally, not having then more time to take part rédactionnellement in the Nouvel Observateur . After the legislative elections of 1978, its maintenance with the head of the drafting of the Matin is felt like bearing damage with the weekly magazine, its presence with the head of the head offices of the two newspapers being denounced by the work's council of the Nouvel Observateur . On the other hand, its autocratic methods like its editorial choices or of development of the daily newspaper cause strong reactions with the Matin where its relationship with certain members of the drafting is very tended.
Le Monde
Claude Perdriel is member of the board of trustees of the daily newspaper Le Monde. At the time of the vote on the renewal of the mandate of Jean-Marie Colombani the May 22nd 2007 with the direction of the World, Perdriel initially tries to be unaware of the consequences of the negative vote of the Company of the Writers of the World, but Colombani must announce its departure finally. The July 28th, during the renewal of the presidency of the board of trustees, Perdriel declares re-elected Alain Minc, whereas this last obtained only 10 votes out of 20 with the contempt of the statutes of the group according to the SRM.
