Biography
Childhood and career on the boards
Exit of a family of Protestant academics, it accepted a good education. As of September 1963, it obtained the authorization to be presented to the entrance examination to the Academy of Dijon, it was not 15 years old, and was accepted first with this contest, thanks to its interpretation of the Coq and the Fox of the Fountain as well as poem of Paul Verlaine After three years . (“I always had the theater in blood (…) My father felt that it was really at home a pressing vocation, it helped me in all the measurement of his means”) . As of this date, it combined the normal studies and the theater. Fall 1966, the vat out of pocket, and having obtained " the 1st price of Comédie" , (“In modern comedy, I choose a scene of Ondine of Jean Giraudoux; into traditional I was Miss Argante in the comedy of Marivaux the unforeseen Outcome ”) it leave to Paris and become a pupil of Jean-Laurent Cochet with the Théâtre Edouard VII, it will follow his courses during more than one year. At that time, J-L Cochet was assisted by other professors: Mrs. Béatrix Dussane gives courses of poetry one morning per week, Odette Laure gives courses of body expression and yoga, Mrs. Mary Marquet sign poetry. In parallel, Claude Jade takes his first steps on television, inter alia in the serial the rare Birds of Jean Dewever.
Truffaut
In June 1967, it is committed with the Modern Theater (today Théâtre of Paris) it interprets at Sacha Pitoëff, actor and Director, the role of Frida in Henri IV of Luigi Pirandello. François Truffaut discovers there (Danielle Darrieux at its beginnings will say it) and the role of Christine Darbon in stolen Baisers proposes to him, at the beginning of January 1968. The film makes Claude Jade (as a partner of Antoine Doinel alias Jean-Pierre Léaud) famous and is at the beginning of the love between the Actrice and the Cinéaste. Christine is in turn that which Antoine Doinel in stolen Baisers courts , then that with which it Marie in marital Home (1970) and that from which he separates in the Love in escape (1978). She is wise and naive in stolen Baisers , soft and bitter in marital Home , independent and given in the Love in escape , its character changes and evolves/moves as the episodes pass, with a disconcerting accuracy, towards more gravity and of bitterness. It is interesting to follow its evolution over the 10 years that this trilogy (1968-1978) lasts.
Truffaut with which it owes the nickname of “small been engaged of the French cinema” thinks of marrying it and very ceremoniously requires its hand of his/her parents, but reconsiders his decision at the last time; it could forgive, and they became indéfectibles friends.
Truffaut wrote in 1971 with its Co-scenario writer Jean-Loup Dabadie to engage Claude Jade for the role of Camille Bliss in a beautiful girl like me , but being too young for this role, it is finally Bernadette Lafont, ten years its elder which held this role; thereafter it did not make main efforts to make it turn in films leaving the “Doinel cycle”. Claude Jade will say, not without humor “I believe that at the bottom it did not want to leave me the drawer Doinel …”
Claude Jade was very close to representing the absolute purity, the grace, the naturalness and simplicity: “the critics recognized my work, they wrote that I had elegance, that I was pure and beautiful…” .
Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock is on the point of turning an American spectacular, of which part of the distribution was to be French. Claude Jade tells that François Truffaut put it in connection with him: “ My parents being English specialists I did not have any problem to express me in English ” Hitchcock asked to meet her in Paris: “ It found that I had the British accent (…) It was faithful to a certain type of woman, and that also played in my favor ”. Two days later it was officially committed, and the October 8th 1968, (“ My first day of turning with the " Master of the suspens" well very exactly the day of my twentieth birthday ”) Claude Jade took place turns the Vice with Alfred Hitchcock, it incarnates Michele Picard, the girl of a Secret agent, (Frederick Stafford) young woman married with a Journaliste (Michel Subor). The French actors engaged in this film are: Dany Robin, Michel Piccoli, Michel Subor, Philippe Noiret and Claude Jade. The various scenes of film were turned in West Germany, with Copenhagen, New York, Washington, Paris and with the Universal studios with Los Angeles.
In the first scenes of film she played an young woman serene and carefree, ( O, I coil the cubans, they are so wild ), thereafter its role evolves dramatically to the fear: in a scene Michele (Jade) the staircase in Jarré spy goes up; the landing door of the apartment remained half-opened, of the window, Michele sees a corpse fallen on the roof from a car parked in the court… Shivers… She will admit the extraordinary chance to have been able to turn with Alfred Hitchcock, but will say not to have been able to benefit from this professional meeting as she would have done if she had had more trade and from experiment and that with ten years more she would have more withdrawn some. Truffaut said of it: “Claude Jade could be the clandestine girl of Grace Kelly” .
It was a pleasant correspondence according to turning, inter alia the consents for Claude in Australia: Dear Claude… did you jump in the pocket of a kangaroo to make the turn of city? If it is the case, you must have a walk very jolting. Affectionately, Hitch or at the time of marriage in 1972 Dear Claude, my more cordial congratulations at the time of your marriage from which the announcement comes to reach me. Endeavor to be faithful that possible to your husband. Cordially, Hitch .
De Molinaro with Mocky and on TV
Beginning 1969, Edouard Molinaro engages it for the role of Lever, the delicious one promised in marriage of Jacques Brel in My uncle Benjamin : its pretty frimousse, its espieglery, its smiles dissolve Brel; but Manette is not a scatterbrain, quite to the contrary, it is a girl who has character, which knows what she wants and that is seen. It is the fifth film of Claude Jade (“ this role of Lever was for me a very pretty gift ”) This film became traditional kind and is been useful by a beautiful distribution: inter alia, Rosy Varte, Bernard Blier, Bernard Alane, Paul Préboist, Lyne Hanging-post, Paul Frankeur, Armand Mestral, Robert Dalban, Alfred Adam etc the scenario of film is adapted novel of Claude Tillier Burgundian lampoonist of the 19th century. The film was made in Burgundy (country of Claude Jade) with Vézelay and around Corbigny. The very last scene will be turned in forest of Rambouillet in the valley of Chevreuse.
With its departure she played the " young women sages" , but sometimes the bitchy girl. In the Boat on the grass (1970) it is Éléonore, an young girl " odieuse" between two friends (Jean-Pierre Cassel and John McEnery). The character incarnated by Claude Jade is not fundamentally antipathetic: undoubtedly it its play a little coquettery, a little perfidy, the instinctive temptation of an young girl who is pretty to want to be desired by all the men, one of was to them enters the friend expensive of its lover. In the malicious pleasure (1974) charming it Julie, a pretty woman without scruple, which allures in its " nest of serpent" a writer (Jacques Weber). In fires of the Candlemas (1972) she plays the part of Laura, girl of notary (Jean Rochefort) and coed in Médecine vis-a-vis a mother Suffragette Hystérique (Annie Girardot). Laura is promised in marriage of Marc (Bernard Fresson). The cinematographic portraits are followed in 1978 by the charming roles like its soft Dominique in the Pawn played by Henri Guybet writer at his hours, but writer of talent.
In addition to Hitchcock, Truffaut and Molinaro, it also turns with other large realizers as André Hunebelle Under the sign of Assembles-Cristo , (1968) it is a contemporary version very freely adapted work of Alexandre Dumas, and consent even of Claude Jade, it is not a masterpiece, but which distribution: Pierre Brasseur, Raymond Pellegrin, Michel Auclair, and the young person Ass Duperey inter alia; at Denys of Patellière she plays the pure Francoise as a partner of Robert Hossein in prohibited Prêtres (1973), with Serguei Youtkhevitch she incarnates Ines Armand in Lénine in Paris (1980), with Pierre Schoendoerffer the young Valouin lawyer, who saves with the widow Nicole Garcia the Honor of a captain (1982) and finally with Jean-Pierre Mocky, the Caroline lesbian, whose Michel Serrault saves the heritage, in Good evening (1992).
Claude Jade turns much for the Télévision. With the Years 1960 and compared to the former generations, television becomes a means for many young actors of beginning, to progress in the trade which they chose, and to reach the cinema thus, even with the theater. Claude Jade belongs to these. As of December 1966, whereas it has been pupil at Jean-Laurent Cochet only for two months, it will play on television into professional, before playing theater, which, at that time there, is its absolute priority. It is committed for small roles in telefilms or televised series: Rivet washer in Pupil (1966/67); or Liliane in Hello Police force (1967) where, like she says it, she forms especially part of the decoration, even if she has a little text. But itself is surprised by this so fast departure: “I was given three years to do something, not three months” His beginnings are followed by a more outstanding role in the serial the rare birds (1967) of Jean Dewever, in which she plays Sylvie Massonneau, one of the five girls of Anna Gaylor and Guy Midsummer's Day.
After its passage to the Pitoëff Company then its meeting with Truffaut, the roles and engagements will become more and especially more interesting. It will turn televised series, Mauregard (1968) produced by Claude de Givray, Co-scenario writer of stolen Baisers , and which will know serious delay, following the event of May. There she plays the orphan Francoise, and Truffaut says to him while joking: “With your large blue eyes, you could all alone play both orphan with you” . Then the roles follow one another, on television as with the cinema “engagements were connected the them same ones, and I was not really surprised” . In 1969, Jean-Christophe Averty ( “It is insane of television which has genius” ) entrusts to him for the festivals of Christmas the role of Héléna in the one night Dream of summer of Shakespeare which it itself translated. At the end of 1971, it turns a fairyhood planned for on December 31st Shéhérazade (whose it plays the part), of Jules Supervielle realized by Pierre Badel. Then it was the Castle lost (1972), which François Chatel carries out, where she plays the part of Louise of Vallière, the young mistress of Louis XIV. She connected the same year with the telefilm that Philippe Arnal the Mandrake according to the part of Machiavelli carried out (where she plays the part of beautiful Lucrèce, and is splendid of capped beauty of the lattice created especially for Liz Taylor in the " Tamed Shrew "). Then it was inter alia the role of Helene, young woman without scruples, in Malaventure (1974); the role of Penny Vanderwood in thinking Robots (1975); the White nurse at the side of Michel Bouquet in Rings of Bicêtre (1976); the role of Lucile Desmoulins in the series loves under revolution (1977), etc
Claude Jade obtains a great popularity with the serial the Island with the thirty coffins (1979) realized by Marcel Cravenne according to the very beautiful adaptation of the novel of Maurice Leblanc: It is Claude Jade who interprets the central figure of the history, Veronique d' Hergemont, which appears in an almost continuous way in integrality of the six episodes (“In fact, over the five months that turning lasted, only one day ago when my name did not appear in the scheme of work”) . With it the hard task to support the history on its shoulders, especially in the middle of the intrigue where it is often only found with the image. The history proceeds in 1917 during the First World War. Its research will lead it in Brittany on the track of his/her father and of his/her son who, whereas everyone believed them dead, had taken refuge on the island of Sarek, more known in the area like the Island with the Thirty Coffins. As of its arrival, the nightmare starts. Enigmatic messages, an alarming prophecy, the superstitious terror of the inhabitants of the island, brutal deaths… Veronique soon only finds herself on the island, without means of fleeing. Until she discovers the truth…
In Moscow then, later in Nicosie, like on its return in France, it will continue to turn series, serials and telefilms.
The December 4th 1972, Claude Jade Marie; she marries a young cultural attache of Ambassade known before during a displacement with Rio (Brésil). In 1976, they will have a son, Pierre. She will turn less regularly then.
International high-speed motorboat
In 1968, in the tread of the Vice , Universal Pictures offered to him seven years an exclusive contract, which it did not accept because it did not want to lose its freedom and to support the constraint to work only for the Americans: “I am French, I made a point of being able to play in my language and living at home, near those which I like. I thus refused”. One then proposed a contract without exclusiveness to him, by which it was to be at the disposal of the studio only for one film per annum, over one seven years duration, which it accepted. But the contract was cancelled fault of proposals, and during a financial crisis of Universal, like the contracts of Katharine Ross, Joanna Shimkus and of Tina Aumont. The American experiment of Claude Jade will remain single… Tony Richardson engages it for the role of Romola de Pulszky, woman of Vaslav Nijinski, as a partner of Rudolf Noureev and Paul Scofield, but the project Nijinsky' S Life , written by Edward Albee and produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, is not carried out.

The Soviet mode applying the censure, prohibited this scene. Into film the young Trofimov Bolshevik, falls in love with Ines Armand). The film was made to Moscow and Paris. Claude Jade will make pretty trotts in his memories at the time of the Soviet Union. Among them, the stay in Arménie with a group of French, whose writer Georges Conchon and former minister Georges Gorse remain a memorable memory so much “ vodka ran with floods and the toasts in the honor of the free-Armenian friendship were connected… ”
Nicosy
In summer 1982, after three last years in Moscow, her husband was named to advise cultural with Nicosie (Cyprus). Claude Jade joined her husband and settles in Nicosie for three years. It is during this period that it will turn the Honor of a captain of Pierre Schoendoerffer. It will benefit from it to go to see François Truffaut at his place, where he was already very sick. In this date, he believed capacity to cure. “It appeared very trustful to me; or was this an elegant manner to hide me the truth on its state? ” Some time afterwards, it turns a Franco-Italian serial: My daughter, my wives and me (4 turned episodes with Rome and in the north of the Italy) it will find there excel it Jacques Dufilho. Return
At the end of 1985, after six years of “exile”, ( “I am sure that my career suffered from it” ) it is reinstalled in Paris. On its return, it will remain active as well in the theater as for television. However, it will seem to have difficulties in being repositioned in the cinema. After four years of cinematographic interruption, in 1986 Rene Féret, realizer and actor, offers the ambiguous role to him of Alice, the sister of Charles Elaine, (Rene Féret), in a police film, the Man who was not there. It is surrounded actors and actresses like Sabine Haudepin, Valerie Stroh, Georges Descrières, Jacques Dufilho… the same year, it return to the theater and agree to play a part of Vladimir Volkoff, the Interrogation put in scene of Christian Alers; she plays there the wife of a German officer whose Americans want to obtain the consents. It was interested in work of François Truffaut (whom it had met at the time of the Business Henri Langlois in 1968). It had the project to carry out a film and wanted to find the interpreters of the Doinel cycle there, to play their own part. Its project did not have a continuation…During the summer 1987, Claude Jade flies away for the Guadeloupe; it will turn with the realizer of Iranian origin Iradj Azimi the raft of the Jellyfish where she will play the part of Reine Schmaltz, the woman of the future governor of the Senegal, fashionable charming, completely unconscious of the tragedy which is played. The title of film is the name of a famous table of the painter Géricault. The base of this film originates in a true story; the shipwreck of the frigate the Jellyfish in 1816, off the coasts of the Senegal the dramatic and events which followed. In this film it is surrounded by a string of talented actors of which Jean Yanne, Daniel Mesguich, Philippe Laudenbach, Laurent Terzieff, Rufus, Jean Desailly etc Remarque: this film had almost as many misfortunes as its subject; delays related to the adjustments of the catches of sights, multiple bad weather, (whose cyclone Hugo celebrates it) which will oblige to remake the decorations, then problems of financing, as from the problems of distribution will come to delay its exit which will arrive only in 1998. A long version for television (3x90mn) would have been envisaged, but remains new to date.
This same year, it turns a television serial the great secrecy of the realizer Jacques Trébouta, according to a novel of Rene Barjavel and a scenario of André Cayatte. She plays there Suzan Frend, the mysterious wife of Claude Rich. Then a film Which is my judges ? of Andre Thierry (this film, where she plays the woman of a truck-driver, played by the rugby player Jean-Pierre Rives, will not be distributed and remains new). In spring 1988, it plays in a very long serial of 30 episodes the head in the air realized by Marlène Bertin and diffused in 1993. She plays there the part of Sylvie, a former dancer, mother of a girl (Valerie Karsenti) impassioned aviation. With the following re-entry, one finds it in a play, written by Catherine Decours, for the bicentenary of the French revolution Régulus 93 or the true story of the Haudaudine Citizen; put in scene of Jean-Luc Tardieu who directs space 44 to Nantes. It is there, in the role of the marchioness of Bonchamps, surrounded actors like Bruno Pradal, Genevieve Fontanel, Liliane Sorval, Michel Leroyer, Michel Fortin…
The years 1990 and 2000
In 1989, it turns a serial blue Fleur, realized by Jean-Pierre Ronssin. The same year, it is found with Douai, because the realizer Charles Bitsch (a friend of youth of Truffaut) asks him to play in his telefilm With the happiness of the others the role of Agnes, a small housewife married to a representative (Roger Mirmont). Then, in 1990, it turns with Stephan Bertin Eternity in front of oneself ; in the episode Windows of the American series the Traveller , it plays the part of Monique, the mysterious neighbor. With the years 1990, it will be done rarer on the big screen. To note that one finds in this telefilm much actors having played in films of Truffaut: Andre Dussollier, Sabine Haudepin, Helen Scott (friendly of Hitchcock and Truffaut, Claude Jade knew it in 1968) and Jeanne Moreau while reciting…
Since the beginning of the years 1990, Claude Jade plays less, not by choice but because the proposals and engagements are done fewer: “When I began, I had as well facility, as I did not think that there could be dubious following days. They exist indeed” In the years which follow, it knows idle periods forced, as well in the cinema as on television or with the theater, where the proposals are not hustled: “the majority of the actresses almost known all in their career tops and of bottoms, less obvious in their male comrades” They are difficult moments to live more especially as its trade it is its vocation. It does not analyze of it less lucidly its trade of actress: “For a woman particularly, it is a difficult trade, because, with the age employment changes, and the beautiful roles rarefy (…) It is necessary to be able and knowledge to wait until a director calls upon you (…) The age can be a handicap…”
But if she suffers much from this state of affair, if television, the cinema, the theater, do not offer anything to him of interesting and are sulky it temporarily, it is during these years when, being with rock bottom, she records the dramatic radiophonic ones and tales for children (she had already tested herself there in 1976), in particular with France Culture, and to even make public readings, with Paris as in Corsica, (she will preserve this practice until the end). In 1997, it plays the widow of the victim, Mrs. Marquis, in a telefilm a child with the sun of Gilles Béhat, belonging to the series Inspecteur Moretti ; in 1998, in lost Memory, an episode of the detective series a woman of honor , it plays Madeleine Trobert, the mother of a kidnapped girl.

Jean Daniel Verhaeghe proposes to him in 2000 to turn in Czech Republic (which she knew at the time of her “Muscovite exile”: it was then the Czechoslovakia) in Without Famille according to Hector Malot, that it realizes for the festivals of Christmas. In September 2001, it goes up on the boards in Paris, the New Mouffetard Theater, to play the part of Marie Sodérini, the mother of Lorenzaccio, put in adapted scene of Alfred de Musset by Henri Lazarini, Lorenzaccio, a conspiracy in 1537 . In 2003, it turns a short-measuring has San Remo Julien Donada; then series: in 2004 Crim' (Armande de Montcourtet in the secrecy ), then in 2005 Group flag (Emma Nazarov in True or false).

Large and beautiful actress, it represented, more particularly in films of François Truffaut, who had discovered it, the discrete grace of the French young woman. Today I pay homage to an actress with the soft luminosity, with a woman, who always kept intact her clearness on her trade and I present my more sincere condolences to his family and his close relations. ”
Jacques Rampal known as: It finished its life on scene… it finished in beauty, giving a remarkable representation, it was on August 8th, it was yesterday. Claude Jade was not very at ease in a medium where it is sometimes necessary to play of the elbows , it continued, and it was neither jealous, nor bitter.
