Claude Gros of Boze

Claude Gros of Boze (January 28th 1680 with Lyon - September 10th 1753 with Paris) is a scholar and numismatist French.

Biography

He makes his studies in Lyon and Paris, where he is established about 1700. Being acquired the support of Nicolas-Joseph Foucault, it becomes in 1705 boarder of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities, of which it is named perpetual secretary the following year. He is elected member of the French Academy in 1715, then becomes in 1719 guard of the Cabinet of the medals and ancient, station which he will occupy until his death. He develops with his pupil and assistant Jean-Jacques Barthélemy a method of classification of the medals and carries out a “inventory and verification of the medals, engraved stones and other ancient scarcities of the Cabinet of the roy” in 1723. He is elected member of the royal Académie of painting and sculpture in 1727. Claude Gros of Boze became member of Royal Society the April 6th 1749.
