Claude ( Claudio ) Gay Mouret , born with Draguignan the March 18th 1800 and died in Deffens, close to Flayosc (VAr) the November 29th 1873, is a Botaniste and naturalist French. It carried out the first thorough studies of the Flore, of the fauna, the Géologie and the Chilean Géographie .
Come in Paris to make studies of Medicine and Pharmacy, it gives up them quickly to be devoted to the Natural history. In 1828, it leaves to Chile to teach the Physique and the natural history in a college of Santiago of Chile. In 1830, it signs a contract with the Chilean Gouvernement to begin various scientific research. It returns to France in 1832 and gives its collections to the national Muséum of natural history of Paris. It goes back to Chile in 1834 and again explores the country during four years. After having visited the Peru in 1839, it settles in Santiago where it writes its Historia fisica there politica of Chile which is published by the government of the country between 1844 and 1871 and which is worth the attribution of the to him Légion of honor of the French government.
In 1841, before returning in France the following year to work there on its work, the government of Jose Joaquín Prieto (1786-1854) confers Chilean nationality to him. It is corresponding Natural history museum in 1831 and it is elected member of the Academy of Science in 1856. In 1863, it goes back last once to Chile.
