Claude Courtépée

The Abbot Claude Courtépée (January 23rd 1721, Saulieu - April 11th 1781) was a Historien French.

Claude Courtépée was the first large historian of Burgundy and more particularly of the Morvan. He was born with Saulieu where his/her father was tanner. Intended for the ecclesiastical state, he studied the right and was accepted graduate with the faculty of Dijon. He entered then to the seminar and was ordered priest. He directed himself towards the Enseignement.

Impassioned History and of Geography, he wrote annals of his province. The first volume of the general and particular Description appeared in 1774. The five others appeared in the six years which followed. It also wrote a history shortened on the same subject. Devoted to knowledge, he undertook the correction of the portable Gazetteer called " Vosgien" and that of the Encyclopedia by adding some notes to it.

One said of him: the historical and topographic Description of the duchy of Burgundy , Dijon, 1774 - 1785, 2 volumes in-8, which was reprinted in 1846 - 1848, and of which it gave itself a summary. Today still, its work is regarded as a reference.
