When the first English colonists arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, they found a Continent slightly populated since several millenia. Eager to free themselves from the oppression of the metropolis and to control by themselves, these colonists have proclaimed their independence in 1776 and created the the United States. Although having known a low register civil war related to the practice of slavery in the States of the south, the young republic developed quickly thanks to the surge of European immigrants. At the conclusion of the First World War, the United States is more the great power of the world, eclipsing the large countries of Europe. They did not leave this role then, taking the head of the “free world” while abrogeant the racial segregation. However, the Guerre of Vietnam called into question the American certainty, making of the United States of today a eminently complex and paradoxical country.
