Claude Ambroise Régnier
Claude Ambroise Régnier , born with Blâmont (Lorraine) the April 6th 1746, died with Paris the June 24th 1814, is a French politician.
Become French with the meeting of Lorraine to the France in 1766, he becomes lawyer with Nancy. Filled with enthusiasm by the Revolution, he is elected the April 6th 1789, by the Bailliage of Nancy, deputy of the Tiers State with the General states, where he sits at the committee of constitution. After the escape of the king, it is sent the June 22nd 1791 as police chief in the departments of the Rhine to receive the oath of the troops there. After being itself withdrawn of the political life under the Terror, he is elected the 23 Vendémiaire An IV appointed Meurthe with the Conseil of Old the, where he sits on the left. The same year, he becomes secretary (2 Frimaire An IV), then president of the assembly (1st Ventôse An IV), and belonged to several commissions (radiation of the list of the emigrants, successions, examination of new for the offenses and sorrows of the troops of the Republic, violations of the press laws, verification of the credentials of the new deputies). Without supporting the Directory, it fights the royalists of the Club of Clichy. Adversary of the néo-Jacobins, in the same way, it supports the proposal of Courtois, leading to the closing of the Club of the Horse-gear. He is re-elected the 23 Germinal An VII.
Acquired with the general Bonaparte, it is one of the principal co-operators of the Coup d'etat of the 18 brumaire; it thus forms part of the members of the Council of Old who meet in their president, the Lemercier, the evening of the 17 Brumaire, to prepare the translation of the councils with Saint-Cloud, which must be voted the following day. 19, it enters to the intermediate commission of the council of Old, of which he becomes president a few days later. The 4 Nivôse Year VIII, it is named with the preserving Senate and the Council of State. Marked by a thorough knowledge of the legal questions, it becomes one of the principal rédacxteurs of the Civil code.
Napoleon appoints it large-judge and Minister for justice (Minister of Justice) the 27 Fructidor An X (September 14th 1802), functions which it preserves until the November 20th 1813. Until the July 10th 1804, it also directs the ministry for the Police force. At this station, he discovers the plot of Cadoudal, of which he informs the lawsuit. He is made knight of the Légion of honor the 9 Vendémiaire An XII, large officer the 25 Prairial, large eagle the 13 Pluviôse An XIII, created count d' Empire the April 24th 1808. He becomes Duc of Massa di Carrara the August 15th 1809. With its departure of the ministry for justice, in 1813, it receives the title of Minister of state and the presidency of the legislative Body, of which he is however not member.
In April 1814, it adheres to the forfeiture of Napoleon. He dies the June 24th 1814 and is buried with the the Pantheon. His/her son, Nicolas Régnier, will become prefect of the even Empire then of France under the Restoration.
