Claude Allègre

Claude Allègre , born on March 31st, 1937 with Paris, is a geochemist and a Politician French.

Youth

The Allègre family is originating in the village of Ceilhes in the Herault. Claude Allègre is the son of a teacher and aggregate of physics-chemistry. To adolescence it binds with Lionel Jospin, at the side of which it resides at the University residence Jean Zay of Antony. It since then remained his faithful friend and a political support.

It finishes its studies doctor in physical sciences.

Scientific career

Academic shining, Claude Allègre turns ves the Géochimie. Its work primarily concerned problems of terrestrial geochemistry, basing itself on the study of the elements traces and of the isotopes. Its contributions facilitated thereafter the comprehension of the constitution of the crust and the terrestrial coat and also of the interaction between these two layers of the Ground. Lively also designed sophisticated models of a certain number of geological processes like the volcanicity, the evolution of the terrestrial atmosphere and the formation of the planetary nebulas. With American G.J.Wasserburg, it developed a certain number of isotopic techniques of datings, and in particular the method of dating by the system Samarium - Neodyme. It is what was worth to him to obtain in 1986 the Prix Crafoord in company of Wasserburg.

In 1968 its team of geochemistry, installed for one year in the buildings of a factory of Saint-Maur-of-Ditches has been attached to the Institut of physique of the sphere of Paris (IPGP) and moves in new the Campus of Jussieu. In 1976, after being become director of the IPGP, it is brought to recommend, at the time of the alarm clock of the Volcan the Sulfur mine in Guadeloupe, the emergency evacuation of the population by fear of an eruption with volcanic clouds, being opposed to the volcanologist Haroun Tazieff which diagnoses simple a phreatic eruption, which proves to be exact.

In 1992, it succeeds Maurice Allègre with the presidency of the Bureau of geological and mining research. Chronicler with the Magazine the Point , it denounces violently, on October 19th, 1996, the decision of asbestos removal of the university of Jussieu and qualifies the business of “phenomenon of collective psychosis”. In 2004, in the book When all is known, one does not envisage anything , it estimates that the costs relating to the asbestos removal of certain buildings of the campus of Jussieu were not justified, the risks really incurred being “so to speak null” according to him.

Political career

Claude Allègre adheres to the Socialist party in 1973.

Special adviser of Lionel Jospin to the Minister of education main road of 1988 with 1992 it is often qualified, because of his influence, “semi-official minister” or “vice-minister” of higher education and research. He is in particular the initiator of the plan “University 2000”. He belongs to the advisers of Lionel Jospin who refuse the reference of the “buckled” young girls Musulmanes of the public schools and consequently he is opposed to the bill on the port Islamic Voile in France in the schools.

Thursday, August 31, on RTL, Claude Allègre confirmed that it " its carte" would not begin again; socialist party in January. " That makes me nausea because that made 34 years that I am member of this parti" , he declared. He however did not exclude to return to the PS if " tomorrow a news direction" was indicated. He affirmed that he " remained deeply of left and much more than the program of PS".

Minister for State education (1997-2000)

Claude Allègre is named on June 2nd, 1997 Minister for State education, Research and Technology in the Gouvernement Lionel Jospin.

Its predecessor, Francois Bayrou, intended to manage jointly the ministry with the Syndicat S, of which SNES, then chaired by Monique Vuaillat. Claude Allègre intends to reform the Higher education. He reforms the teaching staff management, removes overtime of the professors and contributes to set up the European system of diplomas LMD. It defends the need for a bringing together of the school and company and for a “decompartmentalization” of the systems. In this direction, it meets heads of undertaking; the Lively Law of 1999 on the innovation and research allows the Universitaire S and the Enquiring S to create a company of the type Startup and to deposit Brevet S.

However, its advertisements on television and with the radio led to an increasing opposition of the teaching trade unions. June 24th, 1997, he pronounces the sentence: “the mammoth should be degreased”. This sentence is often quoted like the starting point of the conflict. The figures which he announces in September 1997 on the absentee rate of the teachers are quite higher than reality and enter in contradiction with the figures of its own services. In addition to their claims, the trade unions denounce in a recurring way the marked words and the choice of the terms: “massification” of the school, “the teachers have four months of holidays and, moreover, they take their vacation formation on the schooling”.

It is found in addition isolated with Pierre-Gilles from Genoa, in opposition in the majority of the French physicists, when it gives up implementing in France a project of Synchrotron of new generation. He prefers a participation in for budgetary reasons. Roger-Gerard Schwartzenberg, his successor with the Ministry for research, will reconsider this choice and will launch the construction of the Synchrotron Sun.

The conflict with the teachers leads to demonstrations in March 2000 which force Claude Allègre to give his resignation. Jack Lang succeeds to him the ministry.

Opposition to Ségolène Royal

Within the PS, after the withdrawal of Lionel Jospin, in 2002, it militates for the return of this last to national responsibilities. In spring 2006, he hopes to see Jospin standing as a candidate and tries to be opposed to rise to power Ségolène Royal for the candidature for the presidential elections. During an emission with France-Inter, it makes him the reproach be a " politicking professionnelle". September 28th, he declares on France-Information I think that it is able neither to gain, nor to be a president of the Republic. It is Dominique Strauss-Kahn which it supports for the socialist primary educations of November 2006. Following the failure of this last during the primary educations of the PS, it decides to support Jean-Pierre Chevènement, which it prefers by far in Ségolène Royal. Chevènement ends up desisting in favor of the latter.

The March 13rd 2007 (before the first turn of the elections) on RTL, it declares: Not, I will not vote Ségolène Royal. My personal convictions of scientist are stronger than any other consideration. My principal dissension is theoretical. The development of France must be based on the Nucléaire which is the best clean energy source - she, she speaks to decrease it -, on GMO, only manner of maintaining agriculture French - she, she is opposed to the GMO, the Original cells, in short, progress. And I think that the Socialisme it is that, it is to be with progress. However, with my great despair, I find myself a program which is the reverse of that. Therefore, I cannot support it. That does not have anything to have with questions of anybody.

Claude Allègre specified not to be itself maintained with the socialist candidate in the Elysium since " four years, five ans".

I was not very content with his passage to my sides which I had claimed , he declared.

Ségolène Royal was minister delegated to Secondary education when Claude Allègre was Minister for Education.

In September 2007 Claude Allègre publishes a book of discussion with Dominique de Montvalon, assistant editor of the drafting of the Parisien /Aujourd ' today in France . This book, " the defeat by singing " , Plon, reconsiders the failure of the left to the elections presidential and legislative of spring. It is caught some with Ségolène Royal, of which it considers the capacities insufficient for the presidency of the Republic, but more especially with François Holland (" It has foutu a brothel noir" with the PS) and Lionel Jospin which it saved until there. Discusses on climate warming

In 2006, Claude Allègre publishes a weekly chronicle in the magazine the Express train . The September 21st, 2006 and October 5th, 2006, it creates a polemic in its chronicles of the Express train : he affirms to doubt the human influence on the climate, and claims that the total warming is not the essential phenomenon. According to its dires, the changes in progress record more than one great variability of the phenomena that of a total warming. He criticizes the increase in the established budget to the Climatologie while asking more studies to establish the cause of the climatic disordered states and their effects. These assertions cause made indignant reactions of the Verts and many scientists climatologists. In a meeting of the Academy of Science to which Claude Allègre had not gone, the whole of the advanced arguments by the friends of the geochemist, his colleagues academicians Jean-Louis Mouël and Vincent Courtillot, were analyzed in detail and were refuted by the climatologists Herve Treut, of the Academy of Science and Edouard Bard, professor with the Collège de France.
