Claude-François Ménestrier

The father Claude-François Ménestrier is a Historien and heraldist French born with Lyon the March 9th 1631 and died with Paris the January 21st 1705.

Jesuit scholar, it teaches in the Collège S of the Society of Jesus, in particular in that of his birthplace. He becomes responsible for the Ballet S and the Tragédie S represented by the schoolboys at the time of the festivals of end of the year. Thus, in 1658, at the time of a passage of Louis XIV in Lyon, it organizes the rejoicings of reception of the king and composes a ballet for the occasion.

The following year appears its first treaty on the Blason S, the true art of the blazons , followed several supplemented republications, until 1689, year of publication of its Méthode of the blazon .

In 1681, it publishes representations in old and modern music and the following year Of the old and modern ballets, according to the rules of the theater , two fundamental works for the Histoire of the music and the dance. In this last book, it inaugurates a quasi scientific type of research, describing its design of the Ballet from court, the rules which govern its composition and the manner of representing “passions of the heart”. By the accuracy of its reflections and the richness of descriptions, Ménestrier is regarded as the large theorist of the dance at the 17th century.
