Classify Typhoon
A Sous-marin of class Typhoon (Code NATO) is a Russian SNLE . Developed by the company Rubin under the official name of 941 Class Akula (for Project n° 941 - “ Shark ”), it is by far largest Sous-marin in the world. It is a true giant of the seas, he makes more than 170 Mètre S length, 19 from top (with the massive ) and 24 broad. The whole for an average weight higher than 25 000 ton S in diving. This submarine multihulls was deployed in the Années 1980 in the Soviet Marine, then Russian. The Typhoon class counted six built specimens. Five specimens are in service in 2006.
Description
They carry 20 ballistic missiles RSM 52 (code NATO: SN 20 Sturgeon ) of a range of 11 000 kilometers. The RSM 52, sea-to-ground Missile, has 10 heads with independent vectors (each head can aim at a different target). Each warhead has an explosive yield of 100 kilotons (approximately 6 times the atomic bomb of Hiroshima). The missiles are placed in front of the solid mass, which in fact a single submarine, because all the other types of SNLE carry their missiles to the back of the solid mass.

History
Typhoons were, for the period of the Cold war, the nightmare of the American submariners. Rapids (25 nodes in diving), they were in their new state of an almost perfect silence.Currently, the SNLE undergo the effects of the agreement START 1 (nuclear agreement of disarmament of 1991). And just like the other countries having signed this agreement, the Russia must decrease its nuclear arsenal. In 2006, the economic situation of the ex-USSR does not make it possible to maintain these giants the seas stationed at the underwater base of Mourmansk. The Russia thus set in motion a procedure of dismantling.
It remains, in 2007, three Typhoons in service.
It was envisaged to replace them by a new generation known under the name of Projet n° 955 - “ Borei ”, always under development (170 meters of length, 10 of diameter, approximately 12 000 tons on the surface and 17 000 in immersion, more than 25 nodes, 130 men and equipped with missiles SN Bulava ).
