The Classe 67 is a series of 30 Diesel loco of the British railroads built in 1999 and 2000 by Alstom with Valence (Spain) for the account of General Motors Diesel with the Canada.
General information
The thirty engines of this series were acquired by English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) to tractor draw the express trains of transport of the postal courier. EWS had indeed taken again the activity small parcel of British Rail, Rail Express train Systems, in 1996, and inherited on this occasion a park old compound of Diesel locos Classe 47 and electric engines Classe 86, as well as more recent electric engines Classe 90. EWS thus decided to make build a new series of fast Diesel locos (200 km/h) to replace the majority of the engines Classe 47 and Classe 86 on the mail trains. The first engine, n° 67003, were delivered in 1999 and were subjected to one wide trial period. Because of their load with the axle raised, these engines in the beginning were limited to the core of the principal lines, of many secondary lines not being able quite simply to support their mass. In addition to the mail trains and services TPO ( Dolly Post Office ), the machines of this series were also used on special trains, replacing there too the engines of old Class 47. Several machines of this series received names in connection with the mail, like the n° 67001 Night Mail and the n° 67004 Poste Haste .
From the mid- 2000, series 67 had replaced Class 47 on the majority of the mail trains. The machines of the old series were still seen on special trains, in particular on the lines prohibited with Class 67. They were also used to repair trains Thunderbird for the account of GNER.
With the mid- 2003, EWS lost the contract of carriage of the postal mail by rail. The mail trains were gradually stopped, services TPO finishing the ordinary January 9th 2004, and postal services a few months later. Class 67 was thus largely redundant, although it is only five years old of age. The engines quickly replaced Class 47 on the services Thunderbird of GNER, and consecutively with the fall of the passenger traffic, the last were withdrawn from the service to the mid- 2004. Class 67 also saw their employment extending on the trains of freight, often twinned. During the winter months, have saw them at the head trains of treatment of the rails to clean the ways of the dead sheets and white frost. During the summer 2004, several of them were rented with Virgin Trains to ensure the points of traffic of the weekend between the North-East and the southern part.
Two engines, the n° 67005 and 67006, were repainted in one delivered Royal Claret to tractor draw the prestigious royal Train, replacing the two engines Classe the 47 preceding ones. In 2004, the n° 67029 was repainted in delivered silver plated the Executive Silver to tractor draw the Train of company of EWS. However, the fall of the traffic recently involved the garage of several engines while waiting for a resumption of the traffic.
In 2005, certain services TPO were removed.
