Classification of the driving material of the Swiss railroads

The system of classification of the driving material of the Swiss railroads is a system common applied by the Swiss federal Railroads (CF) like by the private railroads to their Locomotive S and motorized oars.

Engines

In a composed oar, whose cars cannot be disconnected, all the axles are taken into account, for example RABDe 8/16 (motorized oar with four cases).

Categories of material

The combination of the letters H and G is possible. HG would indicate consequently an engine with narrow gauge railway with mixed traction by adherence and toothed rack. The official inventory of rolling stock however defines HG in the editions until 1939 generally like “engine for traction by adherence and toothed rack” and classified all the engines with vapor with normal way RHB as a HG 1/2. For the motorized oars and the power trolleys, the combinations He or hm meant in 1966 traction with toothed rack alone, eh or mh, mixed traction adherence/toothed rack. The combination between them of the series has, B, C, Cd, E, G, R and T is not envisaged.

The engines-tenders were indicated by the letter E, speed being always indicated by a small letter. Ea 3/6 was consequently an engine-tender with v. max > 80 km/h, with three coupled axles and three carrying axles. For the engines with vapor, the separate gears were indicated, an engine Mallet was consequently indicated G 2x2/2 or G 2/3+2/2 and not G 4/4 or G 4/5.

Until 1920, electric engines with normal way were indicated by the letter F followed of tiny indicating speed. Be 5/7 was thus called Bfr 5/7 and the first Be 4/6 was called with the delivery Bfr 2x2/3.

The category of material R (for fast ) was envisaged at the origin for engines having a Charge by axle lower than 16 tons. These light engines request less the rails in the curves and could thus circulate there with high speeds (for example 125 km/h instead of 110 km/h). With the startup of the Re 4/4II, the restrictions of weights axle were abandoned after a trial run on line. Various driving machines were authorized to circulate with high speeds in the curves without their designation of the type being still modified.

With the introduction of the Cisalpino Pendolino, one created the category of material NR. These trains, thanks to their system of pendulation, can circulate in the curves with high speeds with those of trains of the category R (for example 160 km/h instead of 125 km/h). Pendular RABDe 500 ( InterCityNeigezug ) also respect these standards, however they are indicated by letter R. === Standard of traction === {| cellpadding=" 3" cellspacing=" 0" border=" 1" style=" to border: Gray solid 1px; to border-collapse: collapse; " |- bgcolor=" #DADADA" ! Divergent of the rules presented here, motorized oars TEE only indicated RAM or RAe, although they were also equipped with special compartments luggage, restaurant or other installations. The railcars with toothed rack have a separate coding. If it is about drive by toothed rack alone, the letter H is placed in front of that which indicates the type of traction. Example: Bhe 2/4 of Gornergrat Bahn. If the vehicle can tensile-test by adherence, the letter H is placed after the basic characteristic of the type of traction. Example: ABDeh 8/8 of Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn. === Standard of traction === Voir higher under “Engines”. Same designations are applied. == Exemples == Here some clarified examples: * Ae 4/7 : Electric engine ( E ) with normal way a maximum speed higher than 85 km/h ( has ) with four driving axles ( 4 ) and seven axles on the whole ( 7 ), i.e. with three carrying axles (This code could also indicate a railcar of first class). * Bm 4/4II : Engine with normal way with diesel traction ( m ), at maximum speed ranging between 75 and 85 km/h, with four axles (second 4 ), all engines (first 4 ). As a preceding series of engines had already received designation Bm 4/4, this one received the index II, recalling that it is about the second series of this type (This code can also indicate a diesel railcar of second class). * RBe 4/4 : Railcars at speed raised in the curves ( R ) with second class compartments ( B ), with four axles (second 4 ), all engines (first 4 ). As the R does not exist for the railcars with narrow gauge railway, it is a railcar with normal way. It cannot be a question of an engine, the combination of the letters R and B not being possible for the engines. * To 3/5 : Engine with vapor ( the type of traction is not indicated ) with normal way, at maximum speed higher than 85 km/h ( has ), with three driving axles ( 3 ) on a total of five ( 5 ), i.e. with two carrying axles (This code could also indicate a railcar with first class compartments). The tender is not price counts some in these designations. * Ge 4/4III : electric engine ( E ) with narrow gauge railway ( G ), with four axles all engines ( 4/4 ). It is the third series which corresponds to this design. ==Designation according to the diagram of classification of the UIC== === Origin === At the end of years 1980, them CF started to prepare a new diagram of classification of their driving machines in conformity with the recommendations of UIC. The indices (Re 4/4IV, V, VI…) started to pose problems during the data-processing seizures. That led in 1988 to the first standard project of classification UIC which however was never applied. One projected, in the new diagram of classification, to replace, in the similar series, the indices by the second figure of the new number and to largely preserve the following figures, of the third to the sixth. The diagram of classification was revised basically in 1992. The indication of the axles in the form of fraction was given up, however the indication of the type of traction was preserved. The old number of vehicle was completely abandoned in favor of the new sequence numbers starting with 000 - new classification takes into account in theory all the vehicles which belonged to the CF in 1988 The importance of the place of the figures became larger and more diversified, and is less easily appréhendable without a table of correspondence. Moreover, in the second project, the Swiss private railroads are also taken into account and identified by means of the third and fourth figures of the number (50-59 BLS, 60-89 other companies). ===Application=== Number UIC places still at the head, in accordance with the old model of classification, the category of material or the equipment, as well as the type of traction ( RABDe 500 or Re 460). The numbers are appeared as two groups of figures in three parts, supplemented by one key of control. The first group of numbers to three digits is used to indicate the series of material ( RABDe 500   008-8 or Re 460   003-7). Number UIC is divided in a functional way into three groups of two digits: First and second figures : type of material and traction *0: Engines with vapor and historical engines ** 00: Engines with vapor ** 01: Electric engines ** 02: Electric motorized oars ** 03: Diesel locos ** 07: Power trolleys ** 08: Snow-plow ** 09: Special vehicles *1: Material with narrow gauge railway (Brünigbahn) ** 10-13: Motorized engines and oars ** 17: Power trolleys ** 18: Snow-plow *2: Power trolleys (shunters, power < 500 kw) ** 20: Accumulator power trolleys (Your) ** 21: Electric power trolleys (Te) ** 22: Power trolleys with double energy source: electric traction and diesel (Tem) ** 23: Power trolleys diesel (Tm) ** 24: Electric power trolleys: food by overhead lines and accumulators (Tea) *3: Electric engines with less than four driving axles *4: Electric engines with four driving axles *6: Electric engines with more than four driving axles ** Second figure after 3,4 and 6: indication of the series of engines in accordance with the old code in Roman numerals placed as exhibitors, for example: *** Re 4 2 0 = Re 4/4 II *** Re 4 3 0 = Re 4/4 III *** Re 4 5 0 = envisaged: Re 4/4 V (locomotive of S-Bahn of Zurich) *5: Motorized railcars and oars ** 50: Motorized oars of large courses ** 51: Motorized oars for the traffic of suburbs ** 52: Motorized oars for the regional traffic ** 53: Railcars of first and second class ** 54: Railcars of second class ** 55: Light railcars of second class ** 56: Recent railcars of second class with compartment luggage ** 57: Old railcars of second class with compartment luggage ** 58: Railcars with luggage ** 59: Railcars diesel *7: not used *8: Diesel locos *9: Electric shunters ** Second figure after 8 and 9: many driving axles Third and fourth figures : company owner Large companies (especially CF, but also the BLS) have, because of their great series of vehicle, great sequences of classification (CF 00-49, BLS 50-59), on the other hand the smallest private networks can number only series of 100 vehicles (00-99), which however is generally enough. * Third quantifies 0 to 4: owner SBB-CFF-FFS ** Third figure for the electric engines and motorized oars: *** 0: Machines monocourant *** 1: Machines monocourant, equipped for Germany *** 2: Machines bicourant *** 3: Machines monocourant, basic standard alternative/ *** 4: Machines quadricourant ** Third figure for the power trolleys: *** 0: up to 99 kw *** 1: 100 to 199 kw *** 2: 200 to 299 kw *** 3: 300 to 399 kw *** 4: 400 to 499 kw ** Fourth figure: Part of the serial number, possibly separate or standard series basic *Troisième figure 5: owner Railroad of Lötschberg (BLS), ex BLS/BN/GBS/SEZ ** Fourth figure: part of the serial number *Autres owners: ** 60: Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB), ex Bodensee-Toggenburg-Bahn (BT) ** 61-63: Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM), ex EBT/VHB/SMB ** 64: old Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB) ** 65: Sihltal Zurich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU) ** 66: Thurbo, ex Mittelthurgaubahn (MThB) ** 67: Thurbo ** 68: Reserved ** 69: BABHE, ex OKK ** 70 and 71: Freibourgese public Transport (TPF), ex C D F Freibourgese Gruyere-Freiburg-Morat (GFM) ** 72: Oensingen-Balsthal Bahn (OeBB), is not used any more ** 73: Neuchâtelois Regional transport (TRN), ex Regional Railroad of Valley-of-Through (RVT) ** 74: Railroads of the Jura (CJ) ** 75: Transport of Martigny and Régions (TMR), ex Railroad Martigny-Orsières it Châble (MO) ** 76: Railroad Sphere-Chavornay (OC) ** 77: Deprived (envisaged at the origin for the West of Switzerland) ** 78: Deprived (envisaged at the origin for the center of Switzerland) ** 79: Deprived including Lokoop (envisaged at the origin for the East of Switzerland) ** 80: Post (POST), ex (postal and telecommunications authorities) ** 81: ex Sensetalbahn (STB) ** 82: South-western Tram Lausannois (TSOL) ** 83: Travys, ex Railroad Bridge-Brassus (PBr) ** 84: BDWM Transport (BDWM), ex Wohlen-Meisterschwanden Bahn (WM) ** 85: Sursee-Triengen-Bahn (ST) ** 86: Rigi-Bahnen (RB), ex Arth-Rigi-Bahn (ARB)/Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn (VRB) ** 87: Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn (RHB) ** 88: Lausanne-Ouchy Subway (LO) ** 89: Kriens-Luzern-Bahn (KLB) Fifth and sixth figure : current classification The numbers of vehicle can begin with 00 or 000 in so far as the fourth figure is not dedicated to a precise function - this principle however was used only by the CF.
