Classification of Köppen
Wladimir Peter Köppen developed in the years 1920 a system of classification of the Climat S only based on the Précipitation S and the Température S. a climate is thus located by a code of two or three letters:
1st letter: type of climate
In the broad outlines, the world climates are spread out of has to E, while going from the equator to the poles.
2nd letter: pluviometric mode
The following categories are thus obtained:
- Af: wet tropical climate
- Aw: climate of tropical savanna
- Am: climate of monsoon
- BS: climate of steppe
- BW: desert climate
- cf: wet moderate climate without season dries
- CW: wet moderate climate with dry winter
- Cs: wet moderate climate with dry summer (Mediterranean climate)
- Df: cold moderate climate without season dries
- Dw: cold moderate climate with dry winter
- AND: climate of tundra
- EFF: climate of ice cap
- EM: maritime climate subarctic
3rd letter: temperature variations
To refine the types B, C and D, a third letter specifies the temperature variations:
Examples
- the the Sahara, or the desert of Arabia, are of type BWh
- the equatorial zone is of type Af
- the France of north east of the type Cfb
- the Amazonia is of type Aw
- the center of the Greenland is of type EFF
- the Siberia is of type Dfc
