Clare Hollingworth

Clare Hollingworth (born the October 10th 1911 with Knighton) is a British Journaliste resident of HongKong since the beginning of the years 1980. Corresponding of War to the beginning of its career in 1939, it is the first journalist to have seen and brought back the preparations of the invasion of the Poland by the German armed .

Before 1939, Hollingworth knows Poland to have worked in the assistance to those which fled the Sudètes after their annexation by the Germany hitlérienne.

Journalist for one week, the Daily Telegraph has sent it to the germano-Polish border during the summer 1939. At the end of August 1939, its report on the important presence of German divisions armor-plated in the sector does the “one” of its newspaper and it is it which informs the British embassy of Warsaw of the invasion, by telephone, on September 1st.

During the Second world war and the first years of post-war period, it carries out its work in Romania, in Greece, Turkey, Palestine, with the the Middle East and in Egypt where it marries its second husband in 1952, its fellow-member Geoffrey Hoare, that it followed during the war and with which it lives since 1945. Its first marriage of 1936 with Vandaleur Robinson is dissolved in 1951.

Installed with Paris, it follows the Guerre of Algeria. After the death of Hoare in 1966, it follows Guerre of Vietnam, then specializes in the East Asia. Starting from the beginning of the year 1980, it resides at HongKong and follows the topicality of the colony, the Popular republic of China the close and countries and territories.

  • 1941-1945: Hollingworth works for several newspapers during the events of the Second world war;
  • 1950-1967: corresponding of the Guardian ;
  • 1967-1981: corresponding of the Daily Telegraph :
    • 1973 : opening of the first office of the newspaper with Beijing.
  • 1981 : corresponding of the Sunday Telegraph .
