Clans is a Board game created by Leo Colovini and published in 2002 by Winning Moves.
For 2 to 4 players, from 10 to 120 years for approximately 30 minutes.
General principle
At the time of prehistory, the men sédentarisent and create increasingly vast communities and from time to time rivals.
Rules of the game
Material
- 1 plan of play representing a broad landscape made up of plains, meadows, deserts, mountains and forests.
- 12 tokens (markers of foundation of villages)
- 60 huts of wood (12 of each color)
- 5 markers of score
- 5 tiles representing a hut of color (secret charts of clan)
Installation
- the 60 huts are placed within play, randomly, but so that all the colors are also distributed in the 12 areas
- Each player receives a secret chart indicating to the color of his clan
- the markers to him of score and of foundation of village are placed on the side of the plate
Goal of the play
There are always 5 clans concerned (whatever the number of players), each clan is identified by a color of hut. Each player tries to make mark points with his clan while trying to hide the identity of this one with the other players.
Unfolding
Movements
The player of which it is the turn, moves the totality of the huts of a territory of his choice in an adjacent territory, provided that this territory is not empty. Thus, certain territories are abandoned whereas villages are formed in others. However, a player cannot move huts since a territory containing 7 huts or more. On the other hand a player can bring huts to a territory containing 7 huts or more.
Villages
When, following the movement of a player, huts (or only one hut) are completely surrounded by empty boxes or the edge of the plate, a village is founded in this territory. When a village is founded, the player at the origin of the movement takes a marker of foundation of village (initially the markers of the first time, then those of the second, and so on from top to bottom) and places it in front of him (at the end of the play, it will mark a point by marker of this collected type). The player then calculates the value of the village and the markers of score are moved on the track of score according to this calculation.Conflicts
The various clans (represented by the huts of various colors) cohabit generally peacefully. On the other hand, when the 5 colors of huts are represented at the time of the foundation of a village, there is conflict. In this case, at the time when the village is founded (but not before the foundation), all the solitary huts are eliminated.Times
The play proceeds during 5 times. In each of the first four times, a type of territory is particularly favorable to the foundation of the villages whereas another type of territory is extremely unfavourable, so much so that a village founded in such a territory is immediately destroyed. On the table of the times, the image of left indicates the type of favorable ground, and that of right-hand side the unfavourable ground.During the 5th time, all the types of ground are favorable.
When a village is founded in a favorable ground, all the colors of huts present in the territory profit from a no-claims bonus of point. When a village is founded in an unfavourable territory, it is destroyed and no hut pays of point! The number of villages founded in each time corresponds to the number of markers of foundation available for this time (4 for the first time, 3 for the second and so on).
One time finishes as soon as all the markers of foundation of this time were taken. One enters the following time then. When a player causes following a movement the simultaneous foundation of two villages, it decides order in which these villages are founded. That is particularly important when the double foundation is carried out between two times. The same if a player founds two villages or more at the time of creation of 12th and last village, it decides which of both (or more) will be 12th (which will save points of no-claims bonus at the huts present in this village). All the other villages founded at this time do not bring back points.
Value of the villages
When a village is founded, its basic value is equal to the number of huts contained in this village (after resolution of the possible conflicts). There are then 3 possibilities:- the village was founded in a type of territory which is neither favorable, nor unfavourable: in this case the value of the village remains unchanged.
- the village was founded in a type of territory which is favorable for this time (ground represented on the left on the table of the times): In this case, the value of the village is increased figure of the time (indicated on the table). This no-claims bonus increases time in time.
- the village was founded in a type of territory which is not favorable for this time (ground represented on the right on the table of the times): in this case, the village is destroyed, the huts are withdrawn from the plate and no point is marked.
End of part and winner
The play finishes immediately after the 12th village was founded. This last village always brings back 5 points of no-claims bonus (in addition to its basic value), whatever the ground on which it is founded. It can also happen that more no movement is possible before the last village is not founded. In this case the play finishes immediately, without other villages being founded.
At this time, all the players reveal their secret colors, while turning over their charts of clan. The markers of colors which do not belong to any player are withdrawn from the track of score. The players advance their pawn on the track of score according to the recovered markers of foundation (1 point by marker of foundation). The player having the most points is gaining it!
