Clan

In the countries of Celtic Europe of influence, Scotland or in Ireland, a clan designates a family or a group of individuals having very strong family ties living under the control of a particular chief, called chief or chieftain . The term comes from the word Gaelic clannad meaning family.

In Scotland, the majority of the members of the same clan bear the same name, sometimes preceded by the word mac (i.e. wire of ): MacDonald , MacGregor , Macintosh , MacKenzie , etc Each clan also counts to septs i.e. family groups bearing a name other than that of the clan, but pertaining however to this one. The clans end up disappearing as the English lifestyle penetrates in the Highlands: besides the British government does all to destroy them after the rebellions jacobites of 1715 and 1745.

In Poland the Noblesse finds its origin in the warlike clans which, with the Moyen-âge, supported the King, of the Princes or Large the Lords. The Polish clan does not refer to consanguinity and the territoriality, like the Scottish clan, but with the membership of the same group of knights. However, there are hundreds of the families different to the inside from the clan and all have the right to use the same armorial bearings.
