Claire Bretécher

Claire Bretécher was born with Nantes the April 17th 1940.

Beginning in the cartoon with a collaboration with Rene Goscinny (1963), the career of Claire Bretécher takes her take-off when she works for Tintin (1965-1966). Collaborating in the newspaper Pilot with his character “Cellulitis” (1969), it stigmatizes excesses there with feminism while defending the cause of the women. It is essential then on the newspaper Spirou (1969-1971) by satires of these contemporary (“Salads of seasons”) where one sees his style evolving to a more acid feature, which brings it closer to Reiser. In 1972, it creates with Marcel Gotlib and Mandryka the Echo of savannas . Also collaborating in ecological monthly magazine the Savage as from 1973, it enters to the Nouvel Observateur the same year with his series Frustrated (October 15th, 1973), integrated in the heading sociétale “Our Time”.

Qualified into 1976 of “better sociologist of the year” by Roland Barthes, his page of Frustrés, according to Jean Daniel, “in-depth, and with the second degree, one of the chronicles is most effectively politicized of our weekly magazine”. According to Florence Montreynaud, the “conformists of the nonconformism” whose Frustrés of Brétecher makes the portrait “are also the readers of Nouvel Observateur”, namely “the snobs, the wire of warping middle-class men, the soft ones, the hard ones, the sexists, the feminists, the parents laxists and their dreadful jojos”. An occasional reader assiduous and collaborator of the newspaper paying homage to him admitted besides, that in what related to it, “frustrated, it is all my portrait”.

Its series on “Holy-Therese d' Avila” causes then a certain number of reactions of indignation of catholic readers which pushes certain journalists (like Hector Bianciotti) to take his defense. If not it is present episodically at the newspaper even if it does not attend the conferences of drafting. But publishing itself its albums, it is particularly enriched following the width by their business success at the point of being able to do without its monthly salary with Obs. Expressing a certain lassitude as well as the desire to make a child, it ceases his weekly collaboration with the beginning of the year 1981 not without continuing episodically to publish there part of its albums, in particular at the time of their exit.
