Clérey-the-Coast
Clérey-the-Coast is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.
Its inhabitants is called Clercycurtiens (habitants.fr source) .
Geography
Clérey-the-coast is located at the North-West of the department of the Vosges, precisely at the border with the Meuse and the Meurthe-et-Moselle, as the Site testifies some to the 3 terminals located in the forest. It is curiously the only place where three Lorraine departments côtoient.The village belongs to the Canton of Coussey, in an area made famous for Jeanne d' Arc since it is to 7 km of Domrémy-the-Virgin. It is also to 55 km of Nancy by Colombey-the-Beautiful, and halfway between Toul and Neufchâteau. The Gallo-Roman site of Grand is at 23 km.
Of modest surface, the commune occupies a position with southern full hillside exposed, on a coast culminating with 427 meters where a single Panorama opens on the valley. It belongs to the Côtes of Meuse, regarded as a true portion of the Mediterranean in Lorraine, from where the presence of a sometimes typical fauna and a flora of the Mediterranean Climat.
Then, the forest leaves room to lawns limestones.
Orchards of Mirabelle plum tree S, Plum tree S, Cherry tree S, Pommier S cover the hill, it remains also still some Vigne S.
Many sources occur there, of which the source Saint Mathieu.
History
The traces of the prehistoric period are rare: some cut tools discovered in the area. However, the village existed already at the Roman period, bearing then the name of Clareium AD Rupem , the Roman Voie energy of Lyon to Trier passer by in the vicinity.This village, where the king was lord high retributive, and who also counted three other lords, is mentioned in a title of May 13rd, 1588, by which inhabitants of Clérey, formerly called Clairey-the-Coast, constituted in Jean, count of Salm, and with its successors lords of Ruppes, an annual rent of an oats bichet by conduit, in recognition of the right of middle-class which the count had granted to them.
In spite of its weak population, this village, formerly named Clairey-the-Coast , had two castles whose vestiges are still visible street of Wood and above the church. Two lords still reigned the day before the Revolution, Mr. de Cholet of Saint Martin's day and the Baron of Saint-Amand.
Thanks to its typical location, the village was saved at the time of the Guerre Thirty Year old whereas the close villages suffered much from it, the village of Moncourt which is located in the vicinity was completely destroyed.
An epidemic of Choléra made many victims which were piled up in a hole walled in the still visible forest today.
The production of a well appreciated wine (pale) was the main activity of the village, thanks to its exposed slopes full southern, with a production of 500 hl for 25 hectares of vines in 1889, a street bears even the name of a vine grower (Tysopin).
But at the beginning of the 20th century, the vines were abandoned following the crisis of the Phylloxera and with the competition of the cheap wines of the south. Certain descents of cellars of old houses still testify to this wine past.
The Germans arrived June 19th and 20th 1940 of the Meuse by the road of Sauvigny, it should be noted that a woman was confined this day with the assistance of a German doctor. The soldiers were not very present in the village during the war
Today a very famous home distiller in the area remains: Georges Fresnais, also former mayor of the village.
The storm of 1999 made heavy damage in the forest.
The mayor, Jean-Louis Schmit (deceased in the course of mandate in 2003), made come from the Swedish loggers and was decorated in the agricultural Order of Merit.
