Cléarque (Sparte)

Cléarque is a general Spartan end of and beginning of fourth century BC

Near to Lysandre, it directs a fleet Spartan at the time of the Peloponnesian War. But in 403, he is condemned to died to Sparte to have disobeyed orders.

He becomes mercenary then and enters to the service of Cyrus the Young person of which he directs the Greek mercenaries during the forwarding of 401 to reverse the brother of Cyrus, Artaxerxès II Memnon . With the battle of Counaxa, the Greeks push back the troops Perse S but Cyrus is killed.

Cléarque then directs the retirement of the Ten Thousand towards north. Contacts are tied with the satrap Tissapherne and Cléarque falls naively into a trap. He is decapitated with many officers of his staff.

It is Xénophon which succeeds to him in this retirement with the head of the mercenaries. He draws up later a rather flattering portrait of Cléarque in the Anabase .
