Civaux
Civaux is a common French, located in the department of the Vienna and the area Poitou-Charentes. Its inhabitants is called the civaliens and civaliennes" or " civausiens and civausiennes .
There is the Nuclear plant of Civaux and necropolis mérovingienne celebrates it.
Geography
The town of Civaux is located in edge of the Vienna, in the south-east of the department of the Vienna.
History
Prehistory and Protohistoire
Cut stones dating from the Acheuléen (between three hundreds and five hundred and thousand years of seniority), from the Moustérien (between thirty thousand and three hundred and thousand years of seniority) and from the time Magdalénien (there are ten to twenty thousand years) were found in the sand pits of Civaux and the surrounding communes.
Sites dating from the average Bronze and the Age of Iron (Gallic time) are also present on the commune, some were excavated, others are simply located by air Archéologie.
Antiquity
A village benefits from the crossing point between the Cité S of the Pictons and the Lémovices and thrives quietly safe from the Pax romana .
The Romans build some monuments there:
- theater (diameter: 50 m);
- a sanctuary with its Fanum , small typically Gallo-Roman temple, in the borough.
Some dwellings, two Four S of potters were found.
Early middle ages
At the end of the Roman Empire, the city does not decline. This maintenance of prosperity is with the propagation of the Christianisme, very early established in Civaux (as of the any end of the 4th century, a church is built there). The sanctuary is transformed into Baptistère with the addition of walls and the installation of a baptismal tank, which attests importance of Civaux like religious center.
Important a Nécropole (it covered nearly three hectares to the XVIII° century) of the time mérovingienne is located near the borough: as of 400, one buries deaths there, and of many sarcophagi there are found and are still visible.
A church is built on the site of an old Gallo-Roman temple, it is dedicated to Saint-Gervais and Saint-Protais.
Civaux becomes the seat of a Viguerie (administrative unit), which confirms and reinforces its importance, which lasts until the end of the Carolingian time. Being in the center of no stronghold, it declines then.
Administration
The commune of Civaux been part, since 1793, of the department of Vienna, the district then of the district of Montmorillon, and of the canton of Lussac become in 1801 Lussac-the-Castles.
Civaux profits from the financial and economic repercussions of the presence of the nuclear plant which made it possible to install equipment of not very usual level in a small commune.
Demography
Civaux knew a strong increase in its population during the 19th century a maintenance then a decrease of 1920 to 1962 which made him find its population of 1800. In spite of an important increase it remains still 15% in lower part of sound plus high level in 1881.

Places and monuments
The Necropolis mérovingienne
The tombs mérovingiennes are in the middle of the current tombs, it is the communal cemetery, the fence consists of drawn up lids of Sarcophage S as of the Menhir S. This fence already exists at the 18th century. In the beginning, the necropolis was very important and extended on several hectares: one estimates between 7000 and 15.000 the number of burials. Nowadays there remains about it more than one hundred still places from there, very close to a vault of the XV°-XVI° century. The lids are often decorated of a cross with three branches.
