Ciutadella

Ciutadella , old capital of Minorque, second city of the island, is located on the west coast of the latter. It is an ecclesiastical and aristocratic city, seat of évêché of Minorque since 1795, where one finds number of sumptuous " palau" (palate) around the medieval cathedral.

At the beginning of the 16th century the city was the seat of the knights to which the king had assigned small strongholds or " cavalleries" so that they can take part in the defense of the island against the frequent Arab incursions.

Ciutadella resisted during nine days in 1558 the seat of 15.000 pirates Turkish, who, after having taken the city, completely destroyed it and took along all the survivors in captivity to Constantinople. A monument set up on Placed are Born, in the middle of the old city, commemorates this event.

In 1722, Sir Richard Kane, British governor of Minorque, made of Mahón the capital of the island to the detriment of Ciutadella, which was it since the Arab domination.
