Minamata (水俣市; - shi) is a coastal small town located on the island of Kyûshû (Préfecture of Kumamoto) at the Japan.

In 2006, the city counted 29,744 inhabitants for 162,87 km ² is a corresponding density of 184,69 inhabitants per km ².

Minamata was founded on April 1st 1949. It was the seat of a catastrophe ecology due to a pollution with the mercury of the food chain of the fishermen, which produced a neurological disease that one indicates since under the name of Maladie of Minamata.
