City-Marie (city)

City-Marie is a Ville Quebec located in the regional municipality of county of Témiscamingue and in the administrative area Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Located close to the border of the Ontario, it borders the Lac Témiscamingue.

History

The city was established at the end of the 19th century, after 1885 especially. It develops around the colony missionary of the Oblats and the stations of forest companies which exploit the large forests Lac Témiscamingue during several decades. The mission of Oblats already had been established in 1863 close to the Fort Témiscamingue. This fort had been built in 1679 on an island to approximately 20 km of the site current by delicatessens of fur skins and destroyed about 1688. The Knight of Troye stopped there in 1686 during his forwarding to take again the forts of the Baie James with the Compagnie of Hudson Bay. He was again founded on his current site in 1720.

The name City-Marie comes from Ville mariale because several cities in the world are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Oblats in particular are known for their devotion towards the Mother of the Christ.

The colonization of the grounds around the lake by families of the older areas of the Quebec leads to the foundation of City-Marie in 1888. The name pays homage to the owner of Oblats of Marie Immaculée. City-Marie is made up in village in 1897. She is today the main city of the rural region of the Témiscamingue to the Quebec.

  • December 22nd, 1962: The village of City-Marie becomes the town of City-Marie.
