Citroen Axel
General information
The Citroen Axel was a car sold in some countries of Western Europe in the years 1985 - 1990. It was a re-examined version of small the Berline Oltcit produced in Romania. In France, three models were sold: Axel , Axel 11R and Axel 12 TRS .
The general form points out that of the Visa, in version 3 doors. It is logical insofar as Axel is based on a project of small truck intended to replace the Ami 8. This project will be taken again to design the Visa, based on a platform of Peugeot 104. Axel is thus the last car of design 100% Citroen.
The motorizations used were those of GSA of 1.129 cm ³ and 1299 cm ³, and for the Rumanian market, the twin-cylinder of 652 cm ³ of the Visa. In France, Axel will have a discrete career, while profiting from a very interesting selling price, the initial version being less expensive than the 2CV. Proportionally, in fact the versions “Undertaken” (two places, VAT to recoverable 18,6% instead of 33%) will have the most success.
Axel offered assets like the Handling, the comfort of suspension, the nervousness, a habitability better than that of the Visa, and a vaster and more practical trunk of access, thanks to a threshold of very low loading and with its back suspension with torsion bars and horizontal shock absorbers, which, contrary to that of the Visa, inherited the Peugeot 104, made it possible to avoid penalizing the working width of the trunk by the wells of vertical shock absorbers. The principle of this suspension will be included besides in the AX, Saxo and Peugeot 106. With the row of the defects, a raised consumption, and for the first models in any case, of many problems of reliability involved in a processing control lack of the Rumanian factory.
