Citizendium

Citizendium is an encyclopedic project similar to Wikipédia, with the difference which it calls upon experts to guide the public in the writing of the articles. The system is founded on a Wiki, and the authors are recorded under their own name. The expertise relates to the checking of the articles, the goal being to obtain an encyclopedia evolving/moving more slowly but containing less errors possible.

Presentation

This project was launched on September 16th, 2006 by Larry Sanger, former editor association of Nupedia, was engaged in March 2000 by Jimmy Wales, then majority shareholder of the company Bomis, at the origin of the project which was going to become Wikipedia the following year, under their common impulse.

In February 2002, the remuneration of Larry Sanger is removed by Bomis and he resigns at the same time of his mandate of editor as a chief of Nupédia, who is in the dead end, and of his functions of organizer as a chief of Wikipédia whose launching is a success.

The final failure of Nupedia is consumed in 2003 and antagonism between Wales and Sanger undermines their relations gradually. In 2005, Wales in vain tries, to call into question the statute of cofounder of Sanger, whereas this last does not miss, for its part, to criticize the online encyclopedia open to all, of which it wishes to propose an alternative model.

Larry Sanger explains: The world needs a better free encyclopedia We believe in the need for an alternative, than this one is justified to make it possible ordinary people to work under the aegis of experts. We believe in the personal responsibilisation, including the use of true names to identify the contributions. In short, us minks to create a responsible community and to train good citizens globaux.

Larry Sanger specifies that Citizendium will not be truly a “encyclopedia”, but rather a “experimental work place”. One can bring Citizendium closer to the preliminary draft of Nupedia or Scholarpedia, encyclopedia being based on a system of review by the pars.
