Circus of Mourèze
The Cirque of Mourèze is located in the commune of Mourèze in the department of the Herault. It is close to the Lac of Salagou and the village of Villeneuvette.
It is about a dolomitic circus where erosion worked a ruiniform landscape, with the extraordinary forms. The rocks bear names: Sphynx, the Guard, Oracle, the Bear and the Shepherd, Blast furnaces, the Cerberus, the Tower of Guetteur, the Tower of the Breach, the Tower of the Hen house, etc
A table of orientation was installed on the View-point of the Parc of Courtinals, from where one has a broad panorama on the circus. The archaeological part “Courtinals” also shelters the scientific reconstitution of a Gallic hut of the time 350 av. J-C, as well as a small museum with the exposure of the vestiges found on the site.
The Circus of Mourèze, formerly sheltered the men of the Préhistoire (several oppida and caves), then accommodated the coalmen and the shepherds. Today, the absence of herd lets the vegetation cover the site, especially attended by the walkers who come to lose themselves in the natural labyrinth of his rocks to the strange forms.
