Cinemas Diagonal

The cinema Diagonal ( Diago ) is a Cinema of Montpellier, exploiting mainly films of art and test, but also some foreign films general public diffused in subtitled Original version .

History

The Diagonal Cinema is dedicated to the cinema of art and test and with the diffusion of foreign films in original version. To this end, a room was exploited with Paillade, popular quarters and in difficulty of Montpellier.

At the time of the advertisement of the opening of a cinema multiplexes Gaumont with Odysseum, in the east of Montpellier, Diagonal belonged to the opponents to this project supported by the town hall of Montpellier. However, the cinemas ceased their action following an offer of Gaumont. This company yielded to Diagonal one these two complexes of the downtown area, Capitole (6 rooms). Gaumont Comedy and Multiplexe not diffusing films in original version, Diagonal accepted the offer to diffuse more films over durations of longer exploitation; diffusion of films general public ( the Lord of the Rings , Spider-Man for example) in original version allowing to attract a new public.

With the beginning of the year 2000, the independent room the Royal one as well as the Gaumont cinemas decided to compete with Diagonal by diffusing some films in original version, in particular the most carrying films (Almodovar, ken Loach…). It should be known that the Gaumont rooms belong to Pathé which is him even distributer of films general public and authors.

In April 2006 the company Diagonal limited liability company (which includes/understands the rooms of the Center, Campus and Celleneuve) was put in file for bankruptcy with a deficit of 350000 Euros. The company Transversal limited liability company which manages Diagonal Capitole was not concerned with this file for bankruptcy.

May 2nd, 2007 company diagonal limited liability company is put in compulsory liquidation, diagonal Center and Celleneuve closes whereas the Campus east began again by the Utopia cinemas. A great restoration will start for an grand opening in September. The spirit of alternative and independent programming will be preserved and improved, the limited liability company creates will have vocation has to transform itself into SCOP so that the team can fully invest itself in the structure.

Rooms

Diagonal currently exploits a place for six rooms.

The Capitole is the complex yielded by Gaumont in 1998. Located between the Place of the Comedy and the Station Saint-Roch.

Diagonal had to close five cinemas: in Montpellier in the district of Paillade, Celleneuve and the place St Denis, like with Sète and Paris the Cinema Europa because of problems of Profitability.
