Chuuk
Chuuk is a group of islands of the north of the Pacifique to approximately 1 000 kilometers in the south-east of Guam located in the islands Carolines. Chuuk belonged to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and constitute the State more populated Federated States of Micronesia among the four States which constitute this federation, the other States being Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.
Chuuk is a word of the local language, micronésien group, which means mountain . Until 1990, following a bad pronunciation of this word, the archipelago was known under the generic name of Truk.
Truk is currently the name of one of the groups of islands of Chuuk, the other independent groups being the Magur islands, the Hall islands and the Mortlock islands. The islands Truk are surrounded by a coral reef which constitutes the lagoon of Truk. During the Second world war, an important part of the Japanese imperial Marine based in this lagoon was destroyed during the Opération Hailstone the February 17th 1944
Tourism, particularly deep-sea divings among the multiple wrecks of the lagoon, constitutes one of important industries of Chuuk.
