Chute in eight

The chute in eight is a metal part presenting two holes of different sizes. It draws its name from its form. It is very much used in Escalade, Alpinisme and Canyonisme.

Description

The principle is to use the friction of the cord by its passage in the eight to slow down the progression on the cord or to slow down a fall. The result causes a thermal release. The diamêtre of the hole of the eight is conceived for cords with simple or double of 8 with 13mm.

There exist several uses, to accelerate the installation of the cord or its adherence, they present nevertheless an increased risk of safety.

The advantage of this material is its use and simple design. The defects mainly observed are the abscence of autobloquage (the cord is braked only if one maintains a tension on the lower bit), and the twist of the cords to long.
