Church of Eremitani
The church of Eremitani ( Chiesa degli eremitani) is a church of Padoue built in 1276 to honor the saints Philippe and Jacques and whose name comes from the old convent of the Ermites of saint Augustin , now seat of the civic museums of the city.
It contains the tombs of Jacopo (1324) and Urbertino (1345) da Carrara (of Carrare), lords of Padoue.
Are there frescos of Guariento di Arpo: allegories of planets, on the pulpit some episodes in colors, a Ecce Homo and on the walls life of saint Augustin, inter alia.
In 1448, Mantegna is called with Nicolò Pizolo and two painters Venetian, Antonio Vivarini and its brother-in-law Giovanni d' Alemagna, to work with the decoration of the vault of Ovetari in the apse of the church. A series of unforeseeable occurrences makes that Mantegna finishes only most of work.
The frescos of Mantegna and other painters, like Ansuino da Forlì, were destroyed in the allied bombardment of 1944 (because near to a German general headquarter).
Reconstituted, they are exposed to the public since 2006.
