Church of Aghbanie

The Église of Aghbanie was a Église established with the the Caucasus in the old kingdom of Aghbanie (Albania of the Caucasus), mainly on the current territory of the republic of Azerbaïdjan. It was related during most of its history to the Église of Arménie, but also with the Église of Georgia. Its primacy who carried the title of Catholicos of Aghbanie recognized the primacy of honor of the Catholicos of all the Armenians . The Church disappeared in 1815 because of the capacity tsarist.

History

Aghbanie was christianized with part of the Arménie towards Ve century. The Church and the State were very dependant and a catholicossat autocéphale of Aghbanie was founded.

It seems that the Church of Aghbanie was rather side of the Église of Georgia at the time of the conflict on the definition of the dogma which will lead to the separation of the two jurisdictions and the integration of the Church géorgienne among the orthodoxe Églises chalcédoniennes.

With the loss of political independence, the Church of Aghbanie will finish by arméniser.

An renewed interest for the Church of Aghbanie appears since the independence of the Azerbaïdjan at the Oudis. The May 26th 2003 a religious entity was set up and was officially recorded under the name of Christian community oudine aghbanienne of the Republic of Azerbaïdjan .

Organization

The catholicossat of Aghbanie had initially its seat with Şəki. It will be transferred thereafter to the monastery from Gandzasar to the Haut-Karabagh (of 1400 with 1815, date of its suppression).

The Monastère Holy-Catherine of the Sinai has two Palimpseste S initially written in Aghbanien between Ve and VIIIe century, then re-used with Xe century in Géorgien. These two manuscripts were identified in 1996 by Zaza Aleksidzé of the Institute of Manuscripts of Tbilissi.

Oudis and Tats

Two small Christian communities of the the Caucasus pertaining to the Armenian apostolic Church, the Oudis in their very large majority and a minority of the Tats, are regarded as the heiresses of the old Church of Aghbanie.
