Church Ukrainian Greek-catholic

The Église Ukrainian Greek-catholic is one of the Eastern Catholic churches. The chief of the Church carries the title of major Archevêque of Kiev and Galicie , with residence with Kiev (titular current: Its Eminence the cardinal Lubomyr Husar, since 2001).

The Church Greek-catholic is by the size the third Church of Ukraine with nearly 8% of the population. There exists another Catholic church in Ukraine: the Roman Catholic church.

History

Jean-Paul II is known to have been the large defender of the community Ukrainian Greek-catholic. The exit of the catacombs of this Church was one of the moments more moving by its pontificate.

Transfer of the seat in Kiev

The August 21st 2005, the seat of the Church is officially transferred from Lviv in Kiev the capital. The title of the primacy changes major Archevêque of Lviv to major Archevêque of Kiev and Galicie .

The change of seat is a new source of tension between the Russian orthodoxe Église and the Roman Catholic church.

Relations with the other Churches

A minority of tendency traditionalist founded the sacerdotal Société Saint-Josaphat of Byzantine rite with the support of the sacerdotal Fraternité Saint-Magpie X, it receives the major orders in the Latin rite. The tensions are sharp with the Church Ukrainian Greek-catholic.

A movement exists within the Church Ukrainian Greek-catholic (clergy and faithful) for his recognition by Rome as patriarchal Église (and).
