Place particular of wireless technologies in Taiwan

Taiwan is the second plus significant market in Asia for wireless technologies type WiFi, WiBro and WIMAX. What master key is there of these remarks with much interest in the rest of the world.

In spite of the opening to competition, CHT managed to control the fixed market indeed up to now (approximately 98%). However, certain wireless technologies are appearing on the market and could constitute a gravitational alternative solution allowing the fixed competitor operators and mobiles to more easily provide all kinds of services (access Internet, telephony on IP…). CHT itself launches out in the deployment of wireless networkings to keep its advance.

The town of Taipei deployed a wireless networking WiFi with a grid subway based on technology radio " wireless Mesh" Canadian group Nortel. It is currently the known metropolitan WiFi wide-area network to date in the world, with nearly 4.100 radio operator nodes in exploitation and a cover of more than 90% of the population (2,6 million). The network, built within the framework of a private public partnership signed with the integrator Q-ware systems, allowed an alternative operator " Wi-Fly" to propose, in its initial offer, access Internet. CHT retorted while launching its own offer Internet without wire available starting from its 1.000 hot-spots through Taiwan. Taking into account the penetration rate of high banc in Taipei, the rate of adoption of the Wi-Fly offer weaker than was envisaged up to now (only a few tens of thousands of subscribers). Wi-Fly thus will re-examine the tariff structure in order to make it gravitational and envisages to propose nouvaux services like telephony on IP in order to increase the average receipt by subscriber. The threat is regarded this time as more serious by CHT and mobile operators, who announced to want to deploy themselves of the offers based on technology. If business success were confirmed, it could lead historical operator CHT to have to very strongly reduce its tariffs DSL and Voice.

To support the development of technologies WiMAX in Taiwan, the ministry for the Economy signed agreements with large foreign actors, in particular Nortel and the German electronic firm Rohde & Schwarz. This agreement aims at creating a laboratory to evaluate the technical sides and the new uses on the networks based on technology WiMAX.

History of the company

Privatization of CHT

CHT was a public administration a long time. It then became a company of private law (July 1st, 1996), held by the state. The privatization of CHT began in October 2000 with the introduction of the title to the purse of Taiwan. In August 2005, the government sold 17% of its shares in the company to local investors (3%) and foreigners (14%), bringing back his participation in 48%. The government is always the principal shareholder of CHT. It however intends to reduce its participation to a total value of 34% in the next months.
