Chuck Cooper

Charles H. more known Cooper under the name of Chuck Cooper (born the September 29th 1926 with Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and dead the February 5th 1984 in the same city) was the first player of black Basket-ball drafté in NBA.

First black player of the NBA?

Chuck Cooper is one of the 3 players who can legitimate the qualifier of first black player of the NBA, each one filling a criterion making it possible to be qualified as follows:
  • Cooper was the first black drafté by a team NBA, the Boston Celtics in 1950.

  • Little time after, Nat Clifton was the first black player to sign a contract with a team NBA: the New York Knicks.
  • Finally, at the beginning of the season 1950 - 51, Earl Lloyd was the first black to be played at the time of a match NBA under the colors of the Washington Capitols, the October 31st 1950 because its team played its first match of the season before that of the 2 others.

Career

After having played for the college Westinghouse high school in Pittsburgh and for the universities of Duquesne and West Virginia State University, Cooper was recruited by the trainer Red Auerbach of Celtics of Boston.

Cooper had a beautiful career in NBA. He played 4 years in Celtics then was exchanged with the Milwaukee Hawks for finally finishing his career with the Fort Wayne Pistons.

During its career NBA, Cooper played 409 matches, marked 2715 points for an average of 6,5 points per match and took 2439 rebounds (5,9 rebounds per match), whereas them counter, the interceptions and the stray bullets were not counted and that the shooting at three points did not exist yet.
