Chtokavien

The Chtokavien ( štokavski ) is one of the three dialects Croatian S. It is spoken in Slavonie, in Zagora, with Dubrovnik and in its surroundings, the western part of the Herzégovine and in central Bosnia; it is the base on which is founded the literary language.

Name chtokavien comes from a linguistic distinction between the three dialects of Croatian: the chtokavien is the dialect where the interrogative pronoun meaning “what” is što marked/ʃto/(it is the chto- of chtokavien ).

It is about the middle of the 19th century that the chtokavien is essential like language of standardization. The primary reason is that it was the dialect of an area not subjected to the Ottoman Empire, and more surely independent (Slavonie) that those of the dialects Kaïkavien and Tchakavien. At that time, the majority of the countries of Europe know a nationalist revival . The “Western” part of Croatia knows more this revival, which makes it possible the chtokavien to be essential like dialect of reference.
