Chtcha (Cyrillic)
Chtcha (capital Щ, tiny щ) is a letter of the Cyrillic alphabet.
Linguistics
- In Russian, this letter represents the sounds or (notation of the API).
- In Ukrainian, or
- In Bulgarian.
This letter is among the least easy with transcribing in Latin alphabet. In linguistics, it can be transcripte by “šč”, in French by “chtch” (either five Latin letters for only one Cyrillic letter), and in German by “schtsch” (or seven!)
History
The letter Щ derives from a Ligature of the letters Ш and Т.
