Chronology of the history of Quebec (1960 to 1981)

This section of the Chronologie of the history of Quebec relates to the events since the Quiet revolution until the repatriation of the Act of British North America.

Years 1960

  • 1960 - General election (Quebec): the election of the liberal of Jean Lesage mark the one decade beginning of radical changes which one names today the Quiet revolution.

  • 1960 - Foundation of the Gathering for national independence. See the History of the movement Québécois souverainist.
  • 1961 - the December 14th, Claire Kirkland-Casgrain becomes the first woman appointed of the legislative Assemblée of Quebec and also the first woman member of the Council of Ministers.
  • 1962 - the construction of the Métro of Montreal begins.
  • 1962 - the bridge Champlain is opened with circulation between Montreal and bank southern.
  • 1962 - General election (Quebec): the liberals of Jean Lesage are re-elected following an election bearing chief clerk on the Nationalization of electricity.
  • 1963 - Gabriel Hudon and Raymond Villeneuve, members of FLQ, are condemned to 12 years of prison for manslaughter. See the Face of release of Quebec.
  • 1963 - the Second vagueness of Nationalization of electricity: April 30th, Hydro-Quebec acquires 8 private producers of Hydroélectricité.
  • 1963 - the July 10th, the age of the majority passes from 21 years to 18 years.
  • 1964 - the government of Quebec creates the minister of education, taking again the responsibilities hitherto a41dernier $c-b1, e,10 $c-b26 ce $c-b16 $c-b43, bn,84 entrusted to the Churches catholic and Protestant woman.
  • 1964 - the women obtain the equality in right.
  • 1965 - the Unifolié becomes the Canadian flag in February.
  • 1966 - General election (Quebec): the National union of Daniel Johnson gains the majority of the seats.
  • 1967 - Opening of the World Fair of Montreal, better known under the name of Expo 67.
  • 1967 - the July 24th, the President of France Charles de Gaulle exclaims “Lives free Quebec! ” the top of the balcony of the town hall of Montreal.
  • 1967 - In October, Rene Lévesque leaves the Liberal party of Quebec and founds the Mouvement Sovereignty-Association.
  • 1967 - Creation of the cégeps by the adoption of bill 60 with the National Assembly of Quebec.
  • 1968 - the June 24th, 290 people are stopped for civil disobedience at the time of the parade of the St-Jean-Baptist to Montreal. It is the Monday of the bludgeon.
  • 1968 - General election (Canada): the liberals of Pierre Trudeau gain the majority of the seats.
  • 1968 - the August 28th, Theater of the green Curtain, one plays the Sisters-in-law of Michel Tremblay for the first time.
  • 1968 - the October 26th, the Parti Québécois is born from fusion the Movement Sovereignty-Association and the national Ralliement.
  • 1968 - the network of the Université of Quebec is created by the government.
  • 1968 - Birth of Radio-Quebec. The institution was famous TV-Quebec in the Nineties.
  • 1968 - Abolition of the Legislative council of Quebec, the not-elected room of the Québécois Parliament.
  • 1969 - Under Pierre Trudeau, the Parlement of Canada adopts the law C-120, the “Law on the official languages”, which makes of English and French the two official languages of Canada.
  • 1969 - the National union of Jean-Jacques Bertrand adopts the “Bill 63” which maintains the status quo as regards language of teaching in the public schools (the parents can choose English or French).
  • 1969 - the Expos of Montreal play their first part of baseball.

Years 1970

  • 1970 - Creation of the “Urban community of Montreal” over the island of the same name, January first.

  • 1970 - General election (Quebec): the liberals gain the majority of the seats.
  • 1970 - the activities Terroriste S of FLQ culminate by the removal of the British diplomat James Richard Cross and of Pierre Laporte, Minister for the government of Robert Bourassa. Pierre Trudeau declares the law martial and the civil laws of the inhabitants of Quebec are suspended. See the Crisis of October.
  • 1971 - the women are made recognize the right to be member of a jury.
  • 1971 - the Prime Minister Robert Bourassa lance the hydroelectric development of the Bay James.
  • 1971 - the constitutional negotiations of Victoria fail.
  • 1973 - General election (Quebec): the liberals of Robert Bourassa are re-elected.
  • 1973 - the royal Gendarmerie of Canada steals the list of the members of the Parti Québécois.
  • 1974 - the liberal government of Bourassa adopts the “Law 22” which makes of French the only official language of Quebec.
  • 1975 - the Charter of the rights and freedoms of the person of Quebec is adopted by the National Assembly and between in force the following year.
  • 1976 - the Olympic Games of summer of 1976 are held with Montreal.
  • 1976 - General election (Quebec): November 15th, the Parti Québécois (PQ) obtains the majority of the seats.
  • 1976 - the Québécois author Saul Bellow gains the Nobel Prize of literature.
  • 1977 - Adoption of the Charter of the French language (law 101) the August 26th.
  • 1977 - the exodus of workers and anglophone unilingual business men accelerates. See Exodus of the english-speaking.
  • 1978 - the principle of the compensation without regard to the responsibility ( No fault ) as regards automobile insurance is applied to Quebec.
  • 1978 - the debates of the National Assembly of Quebec are now televised.
  • 1979 - the liberal of Pierre Trudeau are beaten by the preserving of Joe Clark at the time of the federal general election.

Years 1980

  • 1980 - Pierre Trudeau becomes again Prime Minister of Canada.

  • 1980 - the Prime Minister Rene Lévesque subjects the option sovereignty-association of his party to the vote of the Inhabitants of Quebec at the time of a referendum. 40% of the Québécois electorate vote in favor of the project. See the Québécois Referendum of 1980.
  • 1981 - General election (Quebec): the Parti Québécois is re-elected.
  • 1981 - “Night of the long knives”, the night from November 4th to 5th: the federal government of Pierre Trudeau makes a constitutional agreement with all the provinces of Canada except Quebec.
