Chronology of the history of Portugal

the Middle Ages

  • 1097  : Henri of Burgundy receives Alphonse {{Romain|VI}} of Castille and León, the county of Portugal.

  • 1139  : Alphonse Henriques (Alphonse Ier) proclaims king de Portugal after the Bataille of Ourique.
  • 1143  : Alphonse VII, king of Castille and Leon recognizes Alphonse Ier as king de Portugal (treated of Zamora)
  • 1147  : Alphonse Ier conquers Lisbon.
  • 1249  : Alphonse III pushes back the Moors definitively, by the conquest of the Algarve.
  • 1279 - 1325  : Denis Ier establishes the bases rémotes later great maritime forwardings of a hundred years.
  • 1355  : murder of Inês of Castro (main of the future Pierre Ier), ordered by Alphonse IV, father of this last. With the advent of Pierre in 1357, Ines was unearthed and crowned queen, the Large ones of the kingdom had to kiss the hand to him.

  • 1536  : the Inquisition is established with the kingdom.
  • 1543  : foundation of Lourenço Marks (Maputo) to the Mozambique.

  • 1575  : foundation of Luanda, in Angola.

18th, 18th and 19th centuries

  • 1640  : Revolution of December 1st and restoration of the independence of Portugal. Advent of Jean IV.

  • 1703  : treaty of Methuen. The English textiles enter to Portugal without being taxed against a lowering with the loads on the Portuguese wines in England.
  • 1750 - 1777  : Government of the Marquis de Pombal, minister of Joseph Ier.
  • 1755  : earthquake of Lisbon.
  • 1759  : expulsion of the Jesuits.
  • 1777  : treaty of San Ildefonso with Spain, which fixes the borders of the two empires in South America.
  • 1801  : War of the Oranges with Spain, which will occupy Olivença, whose border is always disputed by Portugal.
  • 1807  : refusing to accept the continental Blockade, Portugal is invaded by the armies of France; the queen Marie I {{Re}} takes refuge in Brazil with the royal family and the court, the Portuguese government sits from now on at Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1808  : unloading of the British forces under Wellesley, future duke of Wellington and expulsion of the French occupant. Portuguese troops will take part in the Guerre of Spain.
  • 1815  : Portugal takes the name of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves .
  • 1821  : the king Jean VI goes back to Portugal and leaves his Pierre oldest son as regent in Brazil.
  • 1822  : the regent Pierre, Pierre Ier, proclaims the independence of the Brésil, recognized by Portugal in 1825.
  • 1890  : British ultimatum , requiring of Portugal the withdrawal of the project which aimed at joining the colonies of Angola and Mozambique by annexing current the Zambia and Zimbabwe.

20th and 21e centuries

  • 1908  : the king Charles I {{er}} and its oldest son Louis Philippe is assassinated.

  • 1910  : end of monarchy, the king Manuel II takes refuge with the the United Kingdom   ; proclamation of the first republic.
  • 1911  : new constitution, separation of the Church and the State.
  • 1916 - 1918  : Portugal engages in the First World War at the sides of combined in France and Africa.
  • 1926  : military coup d'etat, beginning of the military dictatorship.
  • 1933  : a new constitution, voted by plebiscite, establishes the Estado Novo : sole party, prohibition of the Communist party, re-establishment of the rights of the church and the Catholicism of State.
  • 1936  : António de Oliveira Salazar supports the Franquistes during the Spanish Civil war.
  • 1939 - 1945  : Portugal takes part in the Second world war at the side of France (free) and these allies and allows the the United Kingdom and the the United States to use air bases of the the Azores.
  • 1949  : Portugal is one of the States founders of NATO.
  • 1955  : entry with UNO   ; conflict with the India in connection with Goa.
  • 1961  : India appendix Goa   ; revolts in Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, the military dictatorship begins in forwardings to preserve the Portuguese order in the colonial empire.
  • 1968  : Salazar falls ill and is replaced by Marcelo Caetano.
  • 1970  : died of Salazar.
  • 1974  : Revolution of the eyelets  : end of the military dictatorship, beginning of the Decolonization.
  • 1976  : the general António Ramalho Eanes is elected with the presidency Republic.
  • 1986  : entry of Portugal in the European Union. Mário Soares is elected president.
  • 1996  : Jorge Sampaio is elected president of the Republic (January 14th).
  • 1998  : World Fair of Lisbon.
  • 1999  : Macao, colony, is reassigned with the China.
  • 2000  : the escudo (Portuguese currency) leaves room to the Euro (January 1st).
  • 2001  : Jorge Sampaio is re-elected president of the Republic (January 14th).
  • 2002 : anticipated legislatures: the social democrat Left (center-right) form a coalition government with the CDS-PP (right).
  • 2004 : Cut Europe of Nations UEFA.
  • 2004 : Barroso becomes the president of the European commission.
  • 2005  : victory with the legislative elections, absolute, of the Portuguese socialist party.
  • 2006 : election with the first tower of presidential of Anibal Cavaco Silva (right).
