Chronology of the controversy of the caricatures of Mahomet
This article treats the chronology of the international crisis of the caricatures of Mahomet of Jyllands-Posten . Course of the events which followed the caricature publication of Mahomet on September 30th, 2005.
This article describes the stages which made it possible to arrive at violences and tensions international, starting from the publication of the caricatures, by detailing stage by stage the polarization of the conflict, and the climbing of the attitudes on both sides.
2005
September 2005
- September 17th 2005: the Danish newspaper Politiken publishes the article Dyb angst for kritik af Islam (major Fear of the criticism of Islam).
- In September. Flemming Pink, person in charge of the culture section of the preserving newspaper Jyllands-Posten lance a call to the federation of the draftsmen independent of Denmark and their request of the caricatures of Mahomet. This initiative is in particular an answer to the difficulties encountered by the Danish writer Kåre Bluitgen to make illustrate its book for children devoted to Mahomet, the Danish artists contacted by this last having announced their fear of the reactions of Moslem extremists. On the forty artists contacted by the Jyllands-Posten , twelve answer positively.
- September 30th, 2005: First publication of the twelve caricatures by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten under the title faces of Mahomet .
October 2005
- October 9th, 2005: The Islamic Société of Denmark requires that the Jyllands-Posten present its excuses and withdraws the caricatures.
- October 12th 2005: The Jyllands-Posten indicates to have received death threats.
- October 14th 2005:
- 3.500 Moslems express in front of the offices of the Jyllands-Posten .
- Two of the draftsmen receives death threats.
- October 16th 2005: Denmark. A 17 year old teenager is challenged in Aarhus. It is suspecté to have threatened two of the authors of these caricatures.
- October 17th 2005: Publication: Six caricatures of the Jyllands-Posten are published in the Egyptian newspaper Al Fagr, during the Ramadan and without aucunes reactions neither policies nor nuns. (First publication in a Moslem newspaper and second world republication). ,

October 19th 2005: Eleven ambassadors ask to meet the Prime Minister for the Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and require that it take his distances with the drawings published in the Jyllands-Posten like with the other pejorative remarks published in the Danish media on Islam. The Prime Minister refuses this interview under pretext which it does not have of influence on freedom of the press.

October 20th 2005: An Islamic group named the glorious Brigades in Northern Europe threat to make attacks in Denmark, in particular with the seat of Jyllands-Posten .
November 2005

From November to December, a delegation of Imams of the organization Islamic Société of Denmark goes to the the Middle East (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria) under pretext of draw their attentions to the caricatures. They present very discussed the Akkari File of the Caricatures of Mahomet of 43 pages containing of false proclamations.

Publication: another newspaper Danish, Weekendavisen publishes an additional series of 10 caricatures of Mahomet.

November 2nd 2005: The Lebanese Foreign Minister meets the ambassador of Egypt in Lebanon in order to evoke the business of the caricatures and to think of measurements being able to be taken against Denmark.

- Publication: the Bosnian newspaper Slobodna Bosna publishes the caricatures.
- November 7th 2005: The government of the Bangladesh officially protests near the government Danish.
- November 15th 2005: The Pakistani newspaper Nawa-i-waqt indicated that a person in charge of the Islamic group Jamaat-i-Islami offers a reward of 500.000 rupees (7 150 euros) to whoever would kill one of the draftsmen.
- November 16th 2006: WAN, the worldwide association of the newspapers, states to support the action of the Jyllands-Posten .
December 2005
- December 2nd 2005:
- Danish the Prime Minister condemns the remarks of the Islamic person in charge Jamaat-i-Islami while warning its nationals.
- Jamaat-i-Islami indicates that it is not implied in these death threats
- December 8th 2005: The Islamic Summit with Mecque evokes the subject of the caricatures.
- December 29th 2005: The Arab Foreign Ministers, convened in Cairo with the seat of the the Arab League, declare " surprised and indignés" vis-a-vis the inaction of the Danish government.
January 2006
- January 1st 2006: Denmark. During his speech of the New year, Danish the Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, stress the fact that the religion and freedom of thought are respected in a way equal to Denmark.
- January 7th 2006: Publication: two caricatures are printed in the Swedish newspaper Expressen and in associated newspapers Kvällsposten and WP .
- January 10th 2006: Publication: the newspaper conservative-Protestant Magazinet publishes all 12 caricature.
- January 22nd 2006: Publication: the Brussels Journal publishes the caricatures.
- January 24th 2006: The government of Saudi Arabia proclaims its first public judgment of the caricatures.
- January 26th 2006:
- the Saudi Arabia begins the Boycott Danish products.
- Saudi Arabia points out (made return) its ambassador of Denmark
- Norway. The Foreign Minister sends a letter to the Norwegian ambassadors in the Middle East affirming that one of the pillars of the Norwegian company is the Freedom of expression, however it also regrets that Magazinet did not respect the beliefs of the Moslems.
- January 27th 2006: Kuwait. The boycott starts in Kuwait.

February 2nd 2006

- European Union (Vienna). The Austrian presidency of the European Union condemns its attacks like unacceptable.,
- the United States. The United States condemned in a strong way the attacks and showed the mode of the Syrian president Bachar el-Assad to support them.,
- Gaza. Mahmoud Zahar, directing of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas in Gaza declares that the authors of the drawings deserved death: " We should have killed all those which offend the Prophet, and instead of that we are there, protesting peacefully. ;
February 5th 2006
; Events- Lebanon (Beirut). Demonstration: the police force must use teargases to disperse a crowd of demonstrators of more than 15.000 people answering the call of the " National movement for the defense of the Mahomet" prophet; who took by storm the consulate of Denmark and set fire to it. With the slogans " " There is of God only Allah and Mohammed is her prophète" , the demonstrators lapidated churches (Saint-Maron church), trade and villas of the Christian quarters of Achrafiyé, and destroyed of them the police cars, the trucks of firemen. There are several tens of casualties. 180 demonstrators were stopped, 2/3 of the prisoners are Syrian and Palestinian origins.
