Chronology of the Khmer Empire

This article gives to the Chronologie sovereigns of the Khmer Empire .

chronological List with the dates of reign, the title and the posthumous titles possible.

  • 802 - 850: Jayavarman II ( Paramesvara ). Khmer prince maintained in captivity on the island of Java by the sovereigns Çailendra, it returns to Kampuchea towards 800 and manages to abolish the Malayan yoke. He takes the title of Devaraja, God-King. He places his capital, Mehendrapavata , (on the plate of the Phnom Kulen, in the north of the Tonlé Sap).

  • 854 - 877: Jayavarman III ( Viṣṇuloka )
  • 877 - 889: Indravarman II ( Isvaraloka ). He manages to join together the whole of the territories which formed formerly the Tchenla of Water under its sceptre. He establishes his capital, Hariharālaya , close to current the Roluos, built there the first large temples and raises a baray there (artificial lake).
  • 889 - 912: Yaśovarman I ( Paramasivaloka ). It founded a new capital, Yaśodharapura , with Angkor.
  • 912 - 923: Harṣavarman I ( Rudraloka ).
  • 923 - 928: Isanavarman II ( Paramarudraloka );
  • 928 - 941: Jayavarman IV ( Paramasivapada ) transfers the capital to Koh Ker;
  • 941 - 944: Harṣavarman II ( Vrahmaloka gold Brahmaloka );
  • 944 - 968: Rājendravarman ( Śivaloka ). Large builder, it remakes Angkor the capital of the empire and made there build the Banteay Srei.
  • 968 - 1001: Jayavarman V ( Paramasivaloka )
  • 1001 - 1002?: Udayādityavarman I
  • 1002 - 1011?: Jayavīravarman
  • 1001 - 1050: Sūryavarman I ( Narvanapala the ). He is the first sovereign Buddhist Mahāyāna.
  • 1050 - 1066: Udayādityavarman II. It makes set up the Baphuon.
  • 1066 - 1080?: Harṣavarman III ( Sadasivapada ). In 1074, the Chams invade the empire.
  • 1080 - 1113?: Jayavarman VI ( Paramakaivalyapada )
  • 1113 - 1150: Sūryavarman II ( Paramaviṣṇuloka ), King Lépreux. It pushes back the Chams out of the borders during four years of fight. It builds Angkor Vat to celebrate its religion the visnuism. It fights the My S of Lopburi, of which it annex the territory, the Dai Viêts and the Chams with which takes very a long period of conflict (1130 - 1227). Treaties are signed with the China. Under its reign, the Khmer Empire extends on the Siam, to the Burmese border .
  • 1150 - 1160: Dharanindravarman II ( Paramanisṣkalapada )
  • 1160 - 1165/6: Yaśovarman II
  • 1165 - 1177 Tribhuvanadityavarman usurping Mandarin
  • In 1177, Angkor falls between the hands from the Chams and is ransacked.
  • 1181 - 1220?: Jayavarman VII ( Mahā Paramasangata Pada ). It carried out a rebellion against the Chams and managed to drive out them. It built Angkor Thom, seized the territories Chams, the principalities My S (Thailand and current Laos). It imposes its religion, the Bouddhisme Mahāyāna. The empire thus extended until the Isthme from Kra and to the Royaume from Pagan.
  • 1220 - 1243: Indra Varman II Of the movements antibouddhists destabilize the country.
  • 1243 - 1295: Jayavarman VIII (abdication) ( Paramesvarapada ) the country becomes dependant on the Mongolian empire of China in 1285. In 1290, the My S regain their independence. In 1295, it is the same of the Thai kingdom of Sukhothai.
  • 1295 - 1308: Indra Varman III?
  • 1300 - 1307?: Srindravarman (abdication)
  • 1308 - 1327: Srindrajayavarman
  • 1327 - 1300: Jayavamadi Paramesvara . Last sovereign mentioned in an inscription on stone.
  • 1371 -?: Hou-eul-Na
  • 1404: Samtac Pra Phaya
  • 1405 : Samtac Chao Phaya Phing-ya
  • 1405 - 1409: Nippean-beats
  • 1409 - 1416: Lampong or Lampang Paramaja
  • 1416 - 1425: Sorijovong, Sorijong or Lambang
  • 1425 - 1429: Barom Racha, or Gamkhat Ramadhapati
  • 1429 - 1431: Thommo-Soccorach or Dharmasoka
  • 1432 - 1462: Ponhea Yat or Gam Yat

Modern Kampuchea

1434: Phnom Penh becomes the capital.
