Chronology of the Albigensian Crusade
This chronology gives the list of the principal events which have occurred at the time of the Albigensian Crusade .
The crusade of the barons
- 1208 : Assassination of the papal legate, Pierre de Castelnau by a rider of Raymond VI of Toulouse.
- 1209 :
- July 22nd: catch of Béziers whose population is massacred.
- August 15th: catch of Carcassonne. Imprisonment of Raymond-Roger Trencavel, Viscount of Carcassonne, Béziers, Albi and Razès.
- at the end of August: election of Simon IV of Montfort as military chief of the crusade and new Viscount of Carcassonne, Béziers, Albi and Razès.
- 1210 :
- June 21st - July 21st: Sit and taken Minerve (Herault, France) by Simon IV of Montfort.
- - November 23rd: Sit and taken Termes (Aude, France) by Simon IV of Montfort.
- 1211 : Simon IV of Montfort is besieged in Castelnaudary, by the counts of Toulouse and Foix. After this battle, the Albigensian war passes in its political phase. It is really the fight of North against the South.
- 1212 : Simon IV of Montfort begins again with a certain number of cities of the Albigensian and Quercy which had revolted against the occupation of the crusaders.
- 1213 :
- September 12th: Battle of Low wall: Victoire of Simon IV of Montfort against the king of Aragon, Pierre II (which was killed, and his son imprisoned, and raised by Templiers) and his/her brother-in-law the count Raymond VI of Toulouse.

- 1215 :
- Simon IV of Montfort receives the tender of Toulouse
The insurrection occitane
- 1216 : The son of Raymond VI of Toulouse, the future Raymond VII, unloads with Marseilles and besieges Beaucaire. Simon IV of Montfort goes ahead of of him. Toulouse benefits from it to revolt.
- 1217 : Raymond VII takes again the town of Toulouse.
- 1218 : Simon IV of Montfort is killed at the time of the seat of Toulouse which it tries to take again with Raymond VII of Toulouse.
- 1219 : 3rd seat of Toulouse, from June 16th to August 1st. Catch and massacre of Marmande.
- 1220 : 2nd seat of Castelnaudary
- 1221: Catch of Montreal by Raymond VI of Toulouse
- 1222: Died of Raymond VI of Toulouse
- 1223: Died of Raymond-Roger de Foix. Council of Direction which tries to conclude the crusade.
- 1224 : Raymond Trencavel returns in possession of its grounds and takes again Carcassonne.
- 1225 : Raymond VII becomes count of Toulouse and is excommunicated. The Concile of Bourges starts a second crusade.
The royal crusade
- 1226 : Louis VIII share in crusade, descends the valley from the Rhone, takes Avignon after an exhausting seat, then Carcassonne; he dies on the way of the return.
- 1227 : Election of the pope Gregoire IX. The Concile of Narbonne confirms excommunications.
- 1228 : White tender of Raymond VII with Louis IX and of Castille.
- 1229 :
- Traité of Paris (1229) Raymond VII fact penitence in front of Notre-Dame de Paris
- Raymond VII gives his daughter in marriage to the brother of the king, Alphonse of Poitiers.
- Foundation of the University of Toulouse
- Beginning of the Enquiry.
Prolongation of the crusade
- 1232 : Organization of resistance cathare to the Council of Montségur.
- 1237 : Raymond VII obtains from the pope the suspension of the Inquisition in its states during 4 years.
- 1240 : Raymond Trencavel revolts and besieges Carcassonne, without result.
- 1241 : First seat of Montségur.
- 1242 : Massacre inquisiteurs with Avignonet and the second excommunication of Raymond VII.
- 1244 : Catch of Montségur, fortified town cathare, after 10 months of seat and the treason of local loggers. 200 Cathares are flarings.
- 1247 : Final tender of Raymond Trencavel with Paris.
- 1248 : Died of Raymond VII without heir.
- 1255 : Rendering of Quéribus, last fortified town cathare.
- 1278 : 200 Cathares burned with Vérone and 200 others with Sirmione.
- 1321 : The last to rough-hew Cathares, Guillaume Bélibaste is burned in Villerouge Termenès.
- 1328 : Last persecution of Cathares: Emmurement of 510 of them in the cave of Lombrives by Jacques Baker.
