Prehistory

  • -420 000 to -380 000: Wandering hunters are established on a sheltered beach, exposed to the south by Homo erectus on the site of Terra Amata (Insane Earth or the Earth Aimee). The sea level was then with + 26 meters compared to that of today, and the river Paillon emerged there by an estuary.
  • -200 000 : Human occupation of the caves of Lazaret.

In the Antiquity

  • -540 : the Phocéens Greeks are established on what is today the French part of the Mediterranean coast and found, in -600, Massilia (future Marseilles) then, continuing their progression, establish other counters.   • 1246 : Installation of the house of Anjou on the throne comtal of Provence.
  • 1250 : A maritime Arsenal is opened in Nice by the county of Provence with an aim of competing with Genoa.
  • 1250 : Construction of the holy bridge Antoine, only work of art allowing the crossing of the Spangle of XIIIe the XIXe century.
  • 1295 : Creation of the town of Villefranche, close to Nice, with a station of galère S to fight against the pirates.

  • 1691 : The French are, once again, in front of the city. Starting from March 12th, 20.000 men install the seat of the city. This time, Nice capitulates (on April 5th). Louis XIV seizes the niçois worldwide and takes the title of “Count de Nice”.
  • 1693 : Vauban inspects the area of Nice to prepare the restoration of the fortifications.

  • 1792 : Invasion of the country niçois by the French revolutionary troops. The first fastening in France (which will last until in 1814). In reaction to the exactions made by the French troops the Barbétisme appears.
