The Christopher young person receives his education in prestigious schools such as Eton College, Wellington College and the Oxford University where he studies the traditional literature, the Greek and Latin. After its studies, he works in small employment as a boy of service in London. In 1939, it goes voluntary to fight the Soviet Union at the sides of Finland. During the five years which follow, it takes part in the efforts of war under the aegis of Royal Air Force and the British special forces. At the time of the victory of the Allies, it is decorated for its services and receives the title of " Lieutenant" flight; (lieutenant of the air).
The first roles (1922-1956)
After the demobilization of 1946, Lee obtains a seven year old contract with the cinematographic firm Rank. It begins with the cinema in the Gothic lovesong the Strange appointment ( Corridor off Mirrors ) from Terence Young in 1948. In the same year, he plays sides of Sir Laurence Olivier in a film adaptation of a part of Shakespeare, Hamlet . This film with the characteristic to join together for the first time at the screen Christopher Lee and his/her future fellow traveller Peter Cushing, with which it will take down its first great international success. During the Fifties, Lee turns in more than 30 films. The majority are films of adventures, such as Capitaine without fear ( Capitaine Horatio Hornblower ) of Raoul Walsh in 1951, the red Corsair ( The Crimson Pirate ) Robert Siodmak in 1952, the Four Feathers white ( Storm Over the Nile ) of Zoltan Korda in 1955 or In the south of Monbasa ( Beyond Monbasa ) of George Marshall in 1956, whose quality and success are not always with go.
The immortalisation of Dracula (1958 to 1970)
In 1957, it interprets the role of the creature of the baron Frankenstein, incarnated by Peter Cushing in film of horror Frankenstein is escaped ( The Curse off Frankenstein ) of Terence Fisher. This film, produced by the cinematographic firm Hammer Film Productions, gains a sharp success near the British public. It is truly in 1958 with the film the Nightmare of Dracula ( Horror off Dracula ), always consequently produced company, realized by the same realizer and putting in scene the same actors, that success becomes world. Formerly interpreted by the American actor Bleated Lugosi, the almost legendary interpretation of the count Dracula by Christopher Lee makes it possible this one to be recognized as an actor and to enjoy a planetary popularity in the cinema world. Still today, its name is indissociable of that of the famous Vampire of Transylvania. Moreover, Christopher Lee will take again this role with ten recoveries in films such as Dracula, prince of darkness ( Dracula: Prince off Darkness ) of Terence Fisher in 1966, Dracula and the women ( Dracula Has Risen From His Engraves ) Freddie Francis in 1968 or Scars of Dracula ( Scars off Dracula ) of Roy Ward Baker in 1970. Following the success of the first opus, the studios of the Hammer undertake a series of films of horror joining together the same tandem such as the Curse of the Pharaons ( The Mummy ) or the Dog of Baskerville ( The Hound off the Baskervilles ) in 1959 realized by Terence Fisher. On the whole, the two actors will divide the poster of more than twenty productions, for the majority produced by the studios of the Hammer which becomes the initiator of the revival of science fiction film.In the Sixties, accustomed to the roles machiavelic, Lee turns in many films of horror such as Hurle of Fear ( Taste off Fear ) of Seth Holt in 1961, Gorgone ( The Gorgon ) of Terence Fisher in 1964, Circus off Fear of John Llewellyn Moxey in 1966 or the Virgins of Satan ( The Devil Rides Out ) of Terence Fisher in 1968. Perfect Polyglot (he speaks English, German, Italian, French, Russian, Spanish Swedish and Greek), he also turns in foreign productions such as the Body and the whip ( the frusta E it corpo ) of Mario Bava in 1963, the Crypt of the vampire ( the cripta E the incubo ) of Camillo Mastrocinque in 1964 or the Vampire and the blood of the virgins ( Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel ) of Harald Reinl in 1967. Its roles of malicious such as Fu Manchu (which it will incarnate five times at the cinema) or Raspoutine in Raspoutine, the insane monk ( Rasputin: The Mad Monk ) of Don Sharp in 1966 are real successes and accentuate its image of worrying and alarming man.
More varied roles (1970-1995)
In the Seventies, Christopher Lee continues to incarnate the role of the count Dracula and to turn in films of horror. However, finding that this kind of films harms too much its image and its talent of actor, it decides to interpret roles more varied such as Artemidorus in Jules césar ( Julius Caesar ) of Stuart Burge in 1970, the inefficient brother of Sherlock Holmes in the Private life of Sherlock Holmes ( The Private Life off Sherlock Holmes ) of Billy Wilder in 1970, Rochefort in the Three musketeers ( The Three Musketeers ) in 1973 then a continuation the following year the four musketeers ( The Furnace Musketeers ) signed by Richard To ballast or the malicious one, Scaramanga in a James Bond, the Man with the gun of gold ( The Man with the Golden delicious Gun ) of Guy Hamilton in 1974. In 1976, it interprets once again the count Dracula but this time under the sign of the Comédie Burlesque in a film French of Edouard Molinaro Dracula father and wire . The same year, it leaves definitively the studios of the Hammer for the California. In 1977, its first American film , the Shipwrecked men of the 747 ( Airport “77 ) of Jerry Jameson, is worth to him the sympathy of the trade union of the Cascadeur S, Lee having taken part in the meetings of Apnée during the turning of film. He becomes besides member with life and spokesperson of several associations of stuntmen. In the Eighties, far from growing blurred, the cinematographic career of Christopher Lee becomes very prolific, this one accumulating the appearances as much on big screen that on the televisual small screen. He plays in films televised like the Salamander ( The Salamender ) of Peter Zinner in 1981, where he côtoie of the actors such as Franco Nero, Anthony Quinn and Claudia Cardinale or the Round the world tour in 80 days ( Around the World in 80 Days ) of Buzz Kulik in 1989 where he finds his compatriots Eric Idle, Peter Ustinov and Robert Morley. These films give again in Lee some successes though brief and momentary, but its notoriety decreases. He also tests with doubling at the time of the feature-length film of animation the Last Unicorn where he will interpret the role of King Haggard as well in the English original version as in the German version. The career of Lee seems to stagnate until worms end of the year 90 in spite of small notable appearances in films such as Gremlins 2, the new generation ( Gremlins 2: The New Batch ) of Joe Dante in 1990 or the Buffoon of the horror ( Funny Man ) of Simon Sprackling in 1994.
The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars: a bright return (1995 at our days)
It is at the end of years 1990 that two nostalgic of frights hammeriennes is appropriate Lee for their counted. In 1999, Tim Burton carries out Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp in which Christopher Lee makes short but memorable appearance. The latter gives again with the career of the British actor a second breath. It is then approached by Peter Jackson to incarnate Saroumane in the trilogy of the Seigneur of the Rings ( the Lord of the Rings: The Community of the Ring , the Lord of the Rings: The Two Turns then the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ) to the sides of Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen. Coincidence, Lee already had given a few years earlier the Grand Prix of the Festival of Avoriaz to the same scenario writer for his film Braindead in 1993. This trilogy, adapted fantastic Romance of Tolkien (one will also note that it is it only person of the team of film to have met one day this last.), the Lord of the Rings ( The Lord off the Rings ) gains an international real success and becomes a film worship. Going on the traces of his/her friend Cushing, who had interpreted before the Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin in the first opus of the Star Wars ( Star Wars ) of George Lucas in 1977, Christopher Lee signs in its turn for the Homeric saga of the same realizer in the role of the Count Dooku alias Dark Tyrannus in the second ( the Attack of the clones ) and the third ( the Revenge of Sith ) opus.Never return to the stage will have had as much glare. Nowadays, Christopher Lee collapses under the honorary rewards (it was anobli by the queen in November 2001 and decorated Chevalier with Arts and the Letters in France) and artistic (stars on the “boulevards of the celebrity” in Hollywood and London, several nominations with the Oscars and of many special rewards for the whole of its career). In 2005, under the direction of Tim Burton, Lee is turned over to the big screen for two fantastic measurings: Charlie and the chocolate factory ( Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ) where he interprets a worrying dentist, and the cartoon film funeral Weddings ( Corpse Bride ) in which Lee lends its voice to Pasteur mild nutter. He also doubles the voice of DiZ and professor Ansem in Kingdom Hearts 2. Since 2004, Christopher Lee added a new cord to its arc by lending its voice as narrator of the group of symphonic Metal Italian Rhapsody off Fire. It also took part in individual the The Magic Of The Wizard' S Dream , left in 2005, while singing there in duet with Fabio Lione on four versions of the song éponyme, each one in a different language: English, Italian, French, and German. It also spoke on behalf of the group of Heavy Metal American Manowar always as a narrator for three titles of their new album Gods off War (left planned for January 2007), role which was held by Orson Welles with beginning of the year 80.
