Christoph von Dohnányi

Christoph von Dohnányi is a German Leader of Hungarian origin, born with Berlin the September 18th 1929

Biography

He studies the right to Munich as well as the composition, the piano and the direction of orchestra, in particular with his grandfather Ernst von Dohnányi in the United States.

He directs initially to the Opera of Frankfurt, then with Lübeck and Hamburg. He becomes musical director of the Orchestre of Cleveland of 1984 to 2002. He is currently with the head of the Symphony orchestra of the NDR of Hamburg. In 2004, it is indicated “permanent chief” by the new director of the national Opéra of Paris, but division with six other chiefs this title which seems not to cover any precise function and is not used apparently any more by the direction of the Opera. In the capacity as invited chief, it directed other prestigious formations, among which the Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna.

Repertory

In addition to the romantic repertory and Mozart, it also recorded the music of the 20th century with Bartók, Ives, Lutoslawski, Varèse or Webern in particular.

Its remarkable recordings devoted to the symphonies of Dvořák and Brahms combine the sound quality of the Orchestra of Cleveland with a precise direction which privileges the secondary songs.
