Christmas-François De Wailly

Christmas-François De Wailly is a grammairien and French lexicographer born with Amiens the July 31st 1724 and died in Paris the April 7th (or on April 18th) 1801.
Brother of the architect Charles De Wailly (1730 - 1798), raises of the abbot Joseph Valart and from Philippe de Prétot, it passed its life to Paris, where during many years it directed a school especially intended the abroads who wanted to learn French. It published the general Principes and private individuals of the language française (Paris, 1754, in-12, often reprinted), which revolutionized in France the teaching of grammar. The book was adopted like handbook by the University of Paris and commonly employed in all France, a summary being realized for primary school education.
In 1771, it published its Moyens simple and reasoned to decrease the imperfections of our orthographe, where it recommended a phonetic orthography. Among his works, in addition to those which are quoted higher, one finds L' Orthographe of the dames (1782) and the Nouveau Vocabulaire French, or shortened dictionary of Académie (1801).
It was called with the Institut of France during its creation in 1795. He collaborated actively in the dictionary of the Academy published in 1798.
He is the father of the poet Etienne-Augustin De Wailly (1770 - 1821).
